Using Sport-Shift

Hi everyone
I just started driving (6months ago) and my mom gave me her old 99 TL. I have no experience with a manual and was wondering how (and how often) i should use the sportshift. Im a new driver so please give me even the most basic advice. ie. do i need to downshift when coming to a stop.
Thanks for the help

You can downshift coming to a stop to ease up the brakes, but on the TL, the transmission will go back to 1st when you come to a stop. Upshifting means shifting when you want to instead of the automatic, so you can rev it up to redline and shift, but I doubt you want to do that right now since your a new driver. Basically, you should just stick with the automatic part when you drive on a daily basis, and use the tiptronic part when you feel like a little faster and more control than normal.
