What is the annual software update cost for the TL-S navigation system? How often does it get updated?

bayacura,

The current version of the DVD for the Nav system can be ordered online from the myacura section of www.acura.com for $152.00. The current version is vol 2.03 and was released on 10/3/2000. I would assume this is the version in the new models - can someone confirm???

I don't know how often they are released, but it appears they are released every 1-2 years???

Good luck,

Tom

You donot need to get an annual update, since the data is not going to change significantly in one year. The roads will still be the same, the restaurants will still be located at the same place and so on.

You will be better off to get an update, every 3 years or so. It will cost you about 150 bucks.

Question

The reason I am asking is that I was told differently by 2 Acura sales guys. One told me that the 2002 TL-S DVD NAVI system comes with a 4 years free upgrade and that the upgrade is via satellite, you don't get any update cd. This sales guy told me that since the TL-S has GPS the "mothership" will just update the software via satellite. The other guy told me it costs about $150/year to get an upgraded cd.

Which one is right?

The sales fellow who talked about free updates for 4 years, is a fool and does not know his stuff. He should be sacked for misleading his customers. Also, there is no software update happening via satellite. The satellites basically track your position....they do not download data to your car.

The other guy who quoted the 150/yr figure is correct.

Mine needs serious upgrading. There are some streets that don't match with the map on the screen and when I turn, It's as if I'm floating over raw land.

They also need to update several locations like restaurants etc since they've come and gone since the DVD was made.

Where is the antennae for the satellite navigation / tracking system? I know on the AUDI it's on the trunk lid.

I heard that there a few states that aren't covered very well with the version that is out now. Is this true?

Yes it is true. Detailed coverage for several states are still in the works, even though the major roads and highways of all states are covered. For example, if one were to drive from a city in New Jersey to an address in a city in a state that does not have detailed coverage, the NAV would direct us all the way through all the intervening states, and take us to the centre of the destination city in the destination state. From the center of the city (in the destination state), we will have to find our way to the specific address. This situation would be resolved soon with newer updates that are supposed to have more detailed coverage of the Continental United States. It should happen in a year or two, at the latest. The software present in the DVD, would assumably be designed to be faster too, with the additional data.

The upgrades come out each year late summer or early fall.
If you want you can purchase a new DVD disc for your Nav System at that time. The last upgrade DVD is about $152.00 from ACURA. Having just got your car you should have the current DVD version. Any salesperson that told you that upgrades were free for 4yrs is an A$$hole. Some areas are not covered on the current disc. Honda/Acura now has 7 vehicles that use its Nav system so the next upgrade should be better. Some of you that live in newly created developments might not be on the disc.Even some areas that are 20yrs or more old might not be on the disk. I went to my aunts house in Binghamton NY. she has lived there for over 30yrs & the street is not on the Nav system. The road just off from her street is on the disc. Now were I live here in DC. is maped very well. As far as some eating places & stores they change so often. The detailed coverage could never catch up. Here is an example I was going to a CVS (drug store chain) The location was in the Nav. I entered it an when I got there it was not there they had moved to a new location. This stuff changes but Hospitals, Schools, Police, Govt Build don't change that much. Airports Railroad Station & Tracks don't change that much.
