uh-oh is my trannie goin

i was coming off a ramp merging last nite when all of a sudden the car just went out of gear. almost like it was in neutral. the D5 light on the dash turned off. i was doing like 50 mph when it happened and it lasted about 10 seconds. i kept moving the shifter to diffferent gears but nothing happened, then finally it engaged D5 again and all was good.

wtf was that?!!!!!

that was scary as hell!!!! not to mention there was no shoulder there, lucky there was no oncoming traffic.

is this your original trans or a rebuilt one? do you have a warranty? it need to be fixed before it becomes worse or dangerous.

I noticed you JUST made a thread about the most miles on your orignial tranny. I hate to say it but I think you jinxed yourself but you do say you have a 100k so just bring it to the dealer and they should fix it.

Its no big deal to the dealer- they do several a month under extended warranty or goodwill warranty. Call and tell them its not driveable- they will send a tow truck no charge if you are not comfortable driving it.
I always take a box of good donuts with me ~for the guys~ and get amazing service
Enjoy your loaner car!!!

If you are still under 109K, you should be good.

I'm sorta looking at buying an '03 tl-s w/ 185k miles. The body looks great, and so does the interior, but yeah, 185k highway miles.

It's $6850 (otherwise I wouldn't be able to afford one)

So the warranty is 93montsh or 109000 miles, which ever comes first?

Yeah that car's over on mileage and most likely wouldn't be covered. If you were the original owner and got everything done there and have 4 other Acuras that get serviced there MAYBE, but most likely not.

whichever is first- correct

thats really high miles for an 03 and may be a salvage title car for the price-
call acura at the 800 number with the cars VIN # and ask about its history, prior trans replacement? they will know

its 2600$ to rebuild the current trans at major places, complete replacement unit from acura is 4000$
If you cant put that much aside for the rainy day- dont buy a TL without full warranty coverage for as long as you intend to own it
Other than that- toyota makes a low running cost car

Where are you looking for your car? I just looked on AutoTrader and saw several 2G (01-03) TL Type S and CL Type S with around 100k miles for $5500-$7500.

ok so i figured i should let everyone know whats going on...

after my tranny dropped out of gear the one night, i ended up taking the car to ray laks acura in buffalo, ny.

i think it was the service manager, told a mechanic or someone to take the car for a test drive. After waiting about 15 minutes the mechanic finds me in the waiting area and tells me that he was not able to duplicate the slipping. he told me to bring it back if it happens again.

I explained that it was random and that i'm not sure if i'd call that slipping. It actually just dropped out of gear. It wasnt in DRIVE, NEUTRAL or anything, car was just floating at 50 mph !

anyways, this guy says that they cant do anything because he could not duplicate the problem, I cant believe they did not do a diagnostic or anything! to be honest i'm not even sure they created a work order for this!

So I guess my question to you guys is, what do I do next? currently, the car has 100,350 miles.

Also, although this tranny symptom has only occured once, i did tell ray laks that it happened twice. I fugured exagerating the problem just a lil bit may help. Since the day it happened the car has driven beautifully with no issues.

They should have written a work order and had you sign it, write down `Problem Not Found` and sent you on your way with instructions to come back when its worse.

The tech did a quick check of the clutches and overall trans function on a test drive- they have ways of making them act up if they possibly can~ the dealer makes money on the job

If it doesnt act up then, and no codes came up, just wait a few more weeks and it will go out in a more noticable fashion.
In the meantime, go to parts store and ask them to pull the codes and see if anything comes up. My car wouldnt flash the D5 for the dealer- but interpreting the codes told them the trans was slipping and I got a replacement

be honest with the tech- give exact symptoms without embellishment or they go out testing and dont find severe thing they expect
Lie to your dentist about how often you floss- that works in your favor too~

If it happens again - and not engaging in gear is considered slipping of the clutches-
pull over and turn the car off.
Wait 15-30 minutes and restart- should be able to drive home, or keep Acura's # handy and tell them you need a tow to the dealer

The may have done a diagnostics, even if they didnt it probably wouldnt show any thing. unless it was throwing a code.
