Exclamation The truth about the chrome shift plate

Actually our duller pewter-like shiftplates is actually a coating. Underneath this coating is chrome! I found this out because I accidentally chipped a little bit of my plate while installing my shift knob!

Yeah, someone mentioned that last week when Nighthawk said he got in touch with the guy that chromed his.

Keep rubbing it off if you want to.

Don't worry it's not a big ass chip or anything - more like a speck chip when my
alan key slipped.

Well there's a guy who sells them on ebay and he says it's done by a "special process." And that special process is him using his hands to chip off the crap?! Any idiot could do it...

The ones on eBay really are CHROMED. HOWEVER, it is possible to remove the coating by CAREFULLY scratching it off with a razor edge. It is only shiny plastic, and can easily be gouged.
I did it, and I like the look. Just like everything else we mod on our cars, it comes down to personal taste. I do have an extra one that has also been done if anyone is interested.

I have one of those plates and I assure you it is chromed. Scratching off the coating works but the surface will have scratches. That only works for 99 plate. 00 and 01-02 ARE NOT CHROME UNDERNEATH. the plastic is and actual blend made to look like sparkle grey metal.
I have seen the bottom of all plates from all 4 years. If you look underneath you will see the 99 has a dull mirror finish on the inner part underneath because it is chromed then powder coated. 00, 01 and 02 do not have this because the color is in the plastic. you can tell because the 99 feels rough and other years are smooth.
Some of you go a little far to make people you don't know look bad. I met the guy and I brought one of his plates over 10 months ago on ebay and I assure you IT IS CHROMED and not by ACURA. It also had a UV coating. So before you dis, know what you are talking about. I always answered anyone who emailed me about the mods on my car so I don't think it's right to dis him and slander my name in the process as if I set up a group scam so everyone could be screwed.

No disrepect NighthawkBlack, I'm letting people know that underneath the plate which is now cleared up to be only for the 99s is pre-chromed. The mods on your car are first rate, this is just an observation that I found and maybe it could help somebody save a few bucks. Personally I would get it professionally chromed if want to go for that look.

My comment wasn't directed at you and I'm sorry if you took it personally. Sometimes we overpay for things we want but I believe you get what you pay for. I just didn't want 00-02's going out and scratching their plates only to find they messed them up for nothing. The point I was making is that people will always say negative things like that that won't work, or it isn't worth it but they don't propose any other solutions. I admire people like Snook and Nate etc who try and do for themselves and include others unselfishly. Thats all I'm saying!
