Truly Tinted Windows

Everyone here that gets their windows tinted, does so via a film.

You know the windows that come on certain SUV's and minivans...the glass itself is actually tinted.

Is this something that can only be done WHILE the glass is being made, or can this be done to an existing pane of glass?

It would be so awesome to have real Tinted windows! No worry's about scratching, fading, bubbling etc... Plus it would look hella clean!

I'd pay up to a G for those things.

Just wondering if anyone knew about this process.....

I saw a ford motor company presentation in person about how color glass is made. It is the ingredients that go into the melting together. Sand silicates all different cyrstals etc so they are made from more ingredients than just a clear piece of glass so at this point it can't be done the same way to finished glass. Don't know if any company makes replacements that are darker but I doubt it with all the different tint laws from state to state. They would have to make them so light to sell legally in all states that there wouldn't be enough demand. Id like that too but oh well.

I think staining glass to look good would take quite a bit of work. Most colored glasses are made that way, like Nighthawk explained.

Also, just like the old dyed tint film, stained glass would eventually fade and change colors.

As dark as mine are...I'd be in trouble if the officer said..."get this fixed.....and then tries to scrape the tint"

Just get them tinted by a reputable shop and make sure there is a warranty.
