True semi-automatic shifter mod?

Is ther a way to reverse the shift pattern in the 5sp automatic transmission manual mode? That is to make an upshift when you pull back on the stick and to downshift when you push forward on the stick? Just like a true sequential gear box.

I know you can do it on BMW's, you mess around with the wires. If you can do it to them then it would seem that there might be the possibility of doing it to ours. It looked like a very easy process also.

My mom's BMW came standard like that. 5 series. Pull back to shift up and push forward to shift down. No modifications necessary or anything.

That might be true, but BMW changed the pattern. For example on a '00 5 series push up and you get an upshift, pull back and you get a down shift. On the '03 5 series push up and you get a down shift, pull back and you get an upshift. The mod was for changing it for the pull back upshift. You could switch some wires and change the plate that depicts the shift pattern and everyone would be happy.

INtuitively I think it's correct the way it is. Pull back when you want to speed up makes more sense than the other way around.

I agree w/ Jericho...I think I'd rather like it reversed.

I'm looking at the Electronic Troubleshooting manual and it shows the following wiring for the 10 pin plug at the shifter (00-02):

Upshift - Pin #6
white w/ blue stripe (shifter plug side, male) to yellow (PCM plug side, female)

Downshift - Pin #7
blue w/ yellow stripe (shifter plug side, male) to orange (PCM plug side, female)

I don't see why you couldn't just swap these wires around - theres nothing more to it than that. Just 2 wires from the shifter to indicate up or down shifts. You could either switch the shifter plug side or PCM plug side. You'd also want to move the printed indicators in the shift plate (just so its clear what is what). The electronic LED in the dash will still work the same (driven by the PCM). I think I'm going to give this a shot when I swap out my HU. It will be a few weeks though.

*Note* - I am NOT responsible for any mods anyone decides to do...I'm just posting the info.

Thanks keeena, I knew there would be a simple electrical mod, but if it required modifying the mechanical linkage then I wouldn't bother. Guess I shoud've gotten one of those electronic troubleshooting manuals too.

yeah, they're just signal pins, not power pins. you can switch them. it's not like no one has done it before on other cars (as was mentioned). just a little mod to make driving a tad more enjoyable

Keeena is right. When i disassembled the harness to put the tiptronic buttons on my steering wheel i figured out the wiring, and its just simple momentary switches, and those are the correct wires. just whatever you do, DO NOT fuck with the red wire. swap pin 6 and 7, but dont play with the little red one next to it, or your dash will turn different colors

I think the way acura set up the sportshift is very intuitive with "down" to downshift. However, when I was at Park Ave Acura I talked to someone who switched the shifting pattern, so it definitely can be done.

I think he means if you change / short the red wire, your dash lighting will get messed up. I don't think he meant to actually USE the red wire to modify your dash lighting.

This is a really easy mod...shouldn't need pix. Just flip the two wires I mentioned above. Done. But I'm sure someone will post pix at some point.

I know I am going to regret it, but I'll say it anyway... Is swapping two signal wires transforms standard SS into "true semi-automatic"? Just because you would pull back to upshift? Besides, it may be potentially dangerous to your car if somebody unaware of that change drives it (mechanic, your friend, wife, cop etc. - life is full of surprises). Just tell me why you want to do it?

every time i drove a 3 series loaner it pissed me off that i had to deal with the inverted sport shift... i was always happy to get back in to the 540 where plus and minus were where they were supposed to be.

what i meant by "dont fuck with the red wire or your dash will turn colors" was that the red wire is the signal wire for the car being in or out of sport shift. so if you short it wrong while the car is in gear, you get instant check engine light, TSC/VSA light, and blinking D5. like i said, your dash will turn colors

I think people have different preferences, thats all. I think that "back to upshift" is more natural IMO. I think that the author of the thread also feels that this is a "true", or correct, layout.

As far as dangerous...I don't think so. As long as you change the physical indicators on the shift plate, you'd be OK. Anyone familiar w/ a TL who has memorized the pattern may be suprised...but how often would that REALLY happen? Like others have said, different makes use different patterns. PLUS, the system computer wouldn't let you do something that would really kill it (like an accidental downshift at high RPM).

If you want dangerous, talk about reverse-shifting a motorcycle. This is common on race bikes and some guys mod street bikes to do the same thing (its pretty easy, just flip the linkage). There is no computer brain to save you...many people wad bikes because they forget the bike is reverse-shift
