Transmission Question

I posted earlier about buying a 2000 TL and was looking for input regarding any problems. Didn't see any replies stating as such. Having had a chance to read many posts here over the last few evenings, I've seen an awful lot of transmission being fixed / replaced for the same type problem. Is it just because I'm looking for 'trouble', or is this a MAJOR issue? Called the only dealer in my area and spoke with the service dept. They do admit to having to replace some units, but only a very small percentage of what's sold. Actually, it didn't sound any worse than I would normally see at my Maxima dealer for tranny work. What gives here? Should this take the TL's off the top of my list?

We have yet to determine the actual percentage of tranny failures, or what the actual cause of those failures is...therefore, we have inclusive data.

I'll be honest with you. I had no idea they had tranny problems when I bought my used '99 TL. I love the TL, "but if I had known then what I know now", then I may have passed by the TL.

Also, if you buy a Certified Used Acura I think that it has a powertrain warranty up to 100K.

I new about the problems before I bought my 2003 TLS. As long as it's under warranty, I'll keep it. But as soon as it expires, my ownership may too......we'll see. I have a few problems already, but that's to be expected with new upscale cars.

It's like we always hear. If something bad happens, you'll tell 50 people, but if something is normal or good you may only tell 2 or 3. Just realize on this board you're gonna hear 100% of the bad stuff, cuz we all want to be informed and we want our fellow TLers to be informed. (or possibly help out.) But, I'm not gonna post when my car drives normal to the office and back. Tim might charge me double the membership fees in that case.

Someone that can post polls, i.e. Premium Member, please post a simple poll for whether or not people here have had a tranny failure. Something like this, where people pick where the mileage was at when they had a failure; or if no failure, where the mileage is currently at. Don't need mileage for more than one failure.

1. No failures 0-25K mi.
2. No failures 25,001-50K mi.
3. No failures 50,001-XX mi.
4. One failure 0-25K mi.
5. One failure 25,001-50K mi.
6. One failure 50,001-XX mi.
7. More than one failure

If a good majority of people here reply to the poll, we might be able to get somewhat of an idea of just how widespread the tranny problem is among members here. Later on, we can post a second poll asking about failures between TL-P and TL-S.

If this is a fairly big issue, which it seems to be, then why haven't publications such as Consumer Reports picked up on these failures? Their information is collected from owners such as those on this board, correct? Something doesn't jive here.

I just bought a certified 2000 TL. It included a 100k mile powertrain warranty, but i bought the 100k mile bumper to bumber warranty for $595. The best advice i can give to anyone considering a tl would be to BUY IT, you won't regret it. I love mine.

The population that Consumer Reports draws from is much greater than from the members of this forum. Also, people report the GOOD with the BAD, whereas here, it's just the BAD, which is all we really care about. That is why I want someone to post a poll so that we can get some answers here.
