Transmission jerking?

i just bought a 2003 TL-S. i only have 3000 miles on it. i'm worried about a bad transmission b/c i know alot of people have had problems with these cars. so far i haven't had any problems but i noticed that when i put my car in reverse sometimes i get a little jerk. it doesn't go smooth. i don't know if this is supposed to happen or maybe it will get worse. if anyone knows what i'm talking about please respond. thanks alot.

my car jerks around alot too. Sometimes during decelleration is auto downshifts and jerks me around. It feels like a standard sometimes. It sucks. I'm hoping when this transmission FINALLY blows, the new one won't do this so much.

Can anyone add to this post? I just bought my TL-S..... will the jerking stop when the new tranny is installed.... or is this typical for the TL-S?

Joey ... it never hurts to take a test drive w/ an Acura Tech .. and have him tell you WHILE he hears/feels the jerk that it is normal operation. In that way, it's documented and shoudl you ever find yourself w/ failing tranny, you have a great point of contention. Documention is very key.

I am on the second transmission on my 03 TL-S and it keeps doing exactly what you describe. It is very unpredictable. Sometimes it happens 3 times in one day; sometimes it doesn't happen for two weeks. Of course, it only did it once when I had the Acura tech in the car. They cleaned the EGR valves as a result of that. Didn't fix the problem. Just keep getting the "everything is normal, no problems here" routine.

I am very disappointed by the quality of this car, and I am totally frustrated by the apparently inability to make it right. My first Acura. Unless I see a major turnaround, my last.

yES, MINE JERKS WHEN PUTTING IT INTO REVERSE, ESPECIALLY WITH THE ENGINE COLD. Once it is warmed up, it is much smoother. I just always make sure i am at a complete stop when switching between forward and reverse. It has done this since day one (7 miles on the odometer). I know have 43,000. No problems thus far (2003 TL-S). Hope this is a little encouraging.

I have 28,500 miles on my 02 TL-S. Transmission started slipping some a couple of weeks ago. I doesn't happen all the time so I am waiting for it to get worse before taking it to the
dealer for replacement.

Ya I have a '99 and when I go from reverse to drive it jerks if I push the gas right after I shift. I usually go from reverse to neutral, then make sure Im pretty much stoped then go to drive.

This works, but I think its annoying to have to do this on a car like this..I didnt even have to do this on my '90 Chevy truck.

Be concerend

I bought my tl in 2001 and am having it towed to the dealer as we speak. Mine was a little rough..I would recommend calling the dealer and asking them if your tranny us under the extended warranty program

thanks guys i'm trying to figure out if my car is under extended warranty but their website doesn't say anything. my main concern is that i don't rack up alot of miles because i go to school about 1 mile away from my house. and my job is 2 miles away. so i could literally have 20,000 miles before when my 3 year warranty is up. and then my tranny may blow when it hits say 38,000 miles. if anyone knows how to check on an extended warranty please let me know.

take it from someone who has had two replacement trannies - they all suck. It seems that bad auto tranny is just a Honda/Acura feature.

If it "thuds " upon first accel it just might be a front motor mount broken. If it flares up(revs) then slams into gear to third ,then look to an internal failure. From what I gather some cars are getting ECU's and fuel pressure regulators with the trans.

My first "problem" occured backing up. It was slipping and when it engaged (at 2500 rpm) it sent me flying in reverse. Later that day, it dropped from 5th to 2nd, 80-50mph on innerloop 495, not good-

Hey Guys - Same thing happened to my '02 TLS - I put the car in reverse, and the car "bucks" (especially when the engine is very cold) - I brought it back to Acura, and they put a new tranny in for me - There were 4 other TLS's there for the same problem - So bring it back for a new tranny - it's covered under warranty - Also, make sure you get your letter from Acura extending the warranty on the tranny to 100,000 miles!! I just got mine in the mail the other day - Transmission replaced at 24,000 miles. Took about 2 weeks.

I was just going to start a thread about the tranny jerking, but there was already one from today.

I have a 2000TL and you can feel every gear change. Shifts so jerky its freakin annoying as hell. I had a 89accord before this with over 200k and i thought the TL would shift a little smoother than that, but it does not. I changed the ATF a few times and still shifts exactly the same. If it dosn't fall out soon, i might have to sell the car..

Its ashame, i just bought the car not even a year, and every other part of the car is great. Just this crappy as hell tranny, make it feel like i'm driving POS ford escort or something..

I have a 01 TL and have had similar behavior.

When cold it shifts in a most unluxurious way. Stiff and jerky
for the first few blocks. When it is hot I find it changes gears much more smoothly. I noticed this when new and was told the typical "break-in" garbage story. I also find that, even when hot, the tranny "drags" in 2nd and 3rd gear. Meaning that it feels like a manual tranny. It feels like it does not disengage and freewheel (coast) as much as other automatics I am used to.

4th and 5th appear to transition into coasting much better and if you are slowing down and in 3rd for example eventually the tranny feels like it lets go and fully coasts. It is annoying.

I have a 94 Camry v6 auto as an exampe that wants to coast for miles and shifts gears flawlessly and smoothly cold or hot.

The TL has 34000 miles on it and has not shown any degragation with the tranny so it appears to be a benign behavoral design flaw.

I LOVE the engine but HATE the tranny.

I believe it was designed for a sports agressive feel and that's not what I want. They should have provided a "sport mode" to the tranny if that's the case.

/Steve

I have a 2000 3.2TL. I experience the same problem as al of you people described. I't's intermittent though. Very hard to diagnose for the dealer.

I think a year later (2001), the Acura Canada sent all the Acura owners (1999 and up), stating that the warranty on Transmission has extended to 7 years.

I will not buy another Acura. I think I'll get a Subaru Baja or Mazda 6. The cheaper, the better.

As for the transmission issues, I've seen quite a few. I've had up to 5 transmissions sitting in the shop. That being said, Acura did step up to the plate and offer 100k warranty on the cars with the transmission issues. Supposedly, Acura is once again handling their transmissions and since they've supposedly found the fix, a transmission is now rare in my shop

Hehe....sorry guys, I'm the part manager. I LIKE selling transmissions, I just hate it when we replace enough to make the product look bad and scare off customers.

But, like I stated earlier, Acura has taken care of every one of our customers with a tranny issue.
