transmission filter question
transmission filter question
what after market filters does everyone use? I am ready to change mine, most people would prob say OEM but im looking for someone that uses one thats not OEM Honda. I found one on Rockauto for $18 from Pioneer im considering. anyone else with aftermarket filters in same price range?
Edit: Im starting to have a stuttering issue the first thing in the morning and if I start my car 30 mins after sitting and just put in in gear and drive off, using D4 doesnt help, and last time i flush it spot doing this 11k miles ago

If you check out the link I give, you'll see the fluid leaves the warmer on top then goes through the OEM filter then to the return. 12 and 13 in the pic. I'd put it there if I had the warmer on top still. I eliminated mine and it provides feed lines for a cooler and filter etc. http://www.acuraoemparts.com/delray/...All&vinsrch=no

My transmission stuttered in shifts from 1 -> 2 for about 45K miles (from '06 - '11) and it finally died ('11). If you're doing this stuff to fix a problem it won't - these transmissions are time bombs and yours is telling you that it's time to start saving up for an AV6.
In the mean time you can extend the life of yours a bit by doing some of this DIY stuff:
- 3x3 drain/fill with Genuine Honda DW-1 (you said you had yours flushed - NO FLUSHING). I've used Valvoline Maxlife in mine for about 6K miles without any problems but I'm going to switch to DW-1 very soon. Maxlife indicates that it is a suitable replacement for Honda atf-z1 but note that Honda discontinued that fluid in its newer cars for a reason (around 2005 - after the end of their bad transmission years - I guess in searching for the problems with their failing transmissions they discovered a more effective fluid). The people who did your flush probably saw that you are driving a Honda of that age and faithfully/mindlessly replaced with Z1.
- Change 3 quarts of ATF every 15k miles
- Replace your spin-on external filter
- Remove and clean your solenoids
When I had mine rebuilt they told me that the solenoids (1 or more) in my valve body were having problems. The stutter is your clutch packs chattering together repeatedly and that's not good for them. I didn't get a lot of details from the rebuild (I was clueless in '11) but I'll bet the clutch material from the failing 3rd gear pack was clogging up my solenoids, causing the stutter.
Meanwhile, if you put aside $200/mo you should have enough for an AV6 in about 7-8 months. These are great cars and there's no reason to write them off if you're willing to put in some elbow grease.

the ones on amazon are fine
I would buy 2 for the price (approx. 15$) install one now, do some fluid changes and driving,
The new fluid contains cleaners that will put a lot of crud into the filter
After a month or two, install that 2nd/spare filter (stock location- not additional filter as described in post above)

Also Z1 wasn't replaced in 2005... DW-1 just came almost 5 years ago.

I got my exterior transmission filter from autozone for $23. It's a duralast filter, part number TF558. I don't know if it's the same filter for all second gen's or not, but that's what my '02 TL-S required. I've seen the OEM Acura filters go for over $40
