Transmission and ECU Computer

My 2000 acura TL transmission failed at 70k. Dealer would not honor warranty as more than 7 years since I bought car from him. Also he offered no "good will" with cost of transmission ($6,100.)even though I had all my maintenance done at his dealership for 14 years. Dealer said that I needed a new computer (ECU) with transmission which was $1200 included in transmission repair. He said you can not reprogram computer and need new one. Private transmission repair shop said $4300. and no computer needed? Who is right? Is ECU needed?
Can you help?
Thanks.

The new ECU is probably right since they changed it in the Recall to change a little the shift points to ease the transmission load < Private shop will not know this because Im probably sure they don't even know why your transmission got toasted in the first place (They will only tell you typical transmission shop rant: Yeah Hondas got bad transmission).. The ECU change was done with the Recall so its 100% Accurate you will need it..

BUT

I would recommend you:
SCREW THEM!!! Get an Accord V6 2006-2007 Transmission and swap yours it will around 1000-1500 for the trans.. A shop will probably ask 500 to 700 depending on how they think about Swaps in general it will save you money and it will fix the issue with the transmission forever!

DONT REBUILT, DONT GET ANOTHER ONE FROM THE SAME YEAR!!
GET AN ACCORD V6 06-07 TRANSMISSION..

No need for ECU if you go this ^ Route.

Welcome Littlebulldog !!!
Screw them all, do as Skirmich previously suggested.

The newer improved '06>'07 Honda Accord V6's tranny is a direct bolt-in replacement donor for our ailing problematic 2nd Gen trannys. Figure about $1000 for the used donor AV6 and less than $1000 for labor and miscellaneous charges for installing the AV6. You will have revived your old TL for less than $2000 and be good to go for several more years.
