Transmission
About a year ago I got the Acura 3.2TL typeS. I love the car and everything is was great untill one day all of a sudden the car started down-shifting by it's self at high speeds. I brought the car to the dealer and they told me I need a new transmission I had about 20,000 miles on the car at the time. Even though it's covered by the warranty it is still really wierd that the transmission would go on an Acura at 20,000 miles. I just want to know if anyone else has heard of this problem, or if anyone had tranny problems with the type S?
Thank You.
Thank You.

Well, I'll help you with one part... there have been some tranny issues on the board. If you do a search, you'll probably turn up several topics regarding the tranny. On acura-cl.com... we actually have a tranny forum!! The problem was solved on the 2003 (CL's at least) but the forum is still there. It seems to be happening with low miles on the cars, which is good, b/c it's covered under warranty....

The transmission problems have only been fixed on the 2003 CL-S??

I haven't followed the CL board, but have people over there had their trannies go after their warrantee period expired? Were these people able to get the transmission replaced for free? Has Acura admitted that there is something wrong with the transmission?
I guess I'm just getting a little nervous about the transmission going after the warrantee ending. I'm at 34k miles, so my warrantee will last me maybe one more year.

Burning Brakes

Grade logic is built into the transmission control. For instance, when cresting a hill, if you let up on the gas and stay off for a few seconds, if the car's speed stays constant or increases (due to going down the hill), the trans will downshift to the next lower gear.
Additionally, when going up a hill, the trans will hold a lower gear for longer, to maintain pulling power.
So, in fact, there may be nothing wrong at all. There have been several trans problems with the TL-S, but none have the exact symptoms you've described, if I recall correctly.

namor16 - did you experience the same thing that garylee did? or was is just downshifting? If it was just downshifting... then that is probably normal (see T Ho's post).......

Junior...I was responding to namor16's statement:
I love the car and everything is was great untill one day all of a sudden the car started down-shifting by it's self at high speeds.
And my response was that is exactly what my car did...it feels like a downshift...when in fact, as my serv rep said, it is 'hunting for a gear'...then it would slam back into 5th.

hehe... finally, after I knew that I was gunna get the tranny replaced.. I decided to just mess w/ the defective one in my TLS... I would wait 'till it got to the grey area b/w 1st and second gear, then I would floor it to redline and it would SLAM into 2nd gear w/ a screech and pull like crazy (until it got to three.. at which point it prematurely jumped into 4 .. at which point it prematurely jumped into 5... etc).
