Thumbs down Transmission

About a year ago I got the Acura 3.2TL typeS. I love the car and everything is was great untill one day all of a sudden the car started down-shifting by it's self at high speeds. I brought the car to the dealer and they told me I need a new transmission I had about 20,000 miles on the car at the time. Even though it's covered by the warranty it is still really wierd that the transmission would go on an Acura at 20,000 miles. I just want to know if anyone else has heard of this problem, or if anyone had tranny problems with the type S?

Thank You.

Well, I'll help you with one part... there have been some tranny issues on the board. If you do a search, you'll probably turn up several topics regarding the tranny. On acura-cl.com... we actually have a tranny forum!! The problem was solved on the 2003 (CL's at least) but the forum is still there. It seems to be happening with low miles on the cars, which is good, b/c it's covered under warranty....

I believe we have had one or two tranny problems on the '03 TL-S' since they came out while there's been zero on the '03 CL/CL-S. Even with that in mind it seems that the problem is really with the '02 models right now..... only time will tell.

I little too early to say that with the auto. Not enough time has lapsed yet. I have a 2002 CL-S with 12K miles & all is good though. It has been solved in the CL-S 6 speed manual tranny.

I haven't followed the CL board, but have people over there had their trannies go after their warrantee period expired? Were these people able to get the transmission replaced for free? Has Acura admitted that there is something wrong with the transmission?

I guess I'm just getting a little nervous about the transmission going after the warrantee ending. I'm at 34k miles, so my warrantee will last me maybe one more year.

I don't recall seeing any trannys fail with too high of mileage. The most I remember was in the low 40,000's, but it was a 2001 TL which has a different tranny then the '02+ TL's.......

How far is it down-shifting? What were the road conditions when it happened? What were you doing with the accelerator and brake at the time?

Grade logic is built into the transmission control. For instance, when cresting a hill, if you let up on the gas and stay off for a few seconds, if the car's speed stays constant or increases (due to going down the hill), the trans will downshift to the next lower gear.
Additionally, when going up a hill, the trans will hold a lower gear for longer, to maintain pulling power.

So, in fact, there may be nothing wrong at all. There have been several trans problems with the TL-S, but none have the exact symptoms you've described, if I recall correctly.

Mine did this at high speeds as well...kept jumping out of 5th and hunting for a gear...the car would jerk as it was doing this.

That's totally different then what he said... I think we just need some more info....

namor16 - did you experience the same thing that garylee did? or was is just downshifting? If it was just downshifting... then that is probably normal (see T Ho's post).......

Junior...I was responding to namor16's statement:

I love the car and everything is was great untill one day all of a sudden the car started down-shifting by it's self at high speeds.

And my response was that is exactly what my car did...it feels like a downshift...when in fact, as my serv rep said, it is 'hunting for a gear'...then it would slam back into 5th.

hehe... finally, after I knew that I was gunna get the tranny replaced.. I decided to just mess w/ the defective one in my TLS... I would wait 'till it got to the grey area b/w 1st and second gear, then I would floor it to redline and it would SLAM into 2nd gear w/ a screech and pull like crazy (until it got to three.. at which point it prematurely jumped into 4 .. at which point it prematurely jumped into 5... etc).

Grade Logic

Since moving to Tennessee from SE Wisconsin I have finally been experiencing "grade logic" all the time. It sucks. The car is constantly down-shifting as I'm coasting downhill. If I touch the brake it instantly down-shifts. It is annoying and, i venture to guess, hard on the tranny. I wish Acura had a defeat switch for this. I would rather put wear on my brake pads than my transmission.
