Transmi may shift at high rpm

Hi all
My 02 tl got 90 kmiles and my guarantee will expire on Fev/2009
I don't know if it's me or my trans is acting up .It looks like it shifts a
bit high in RPM but at the right speed . i.e.

1th gear 2000-2500 rpm at 13miles/h
2th gear 2000-3000 rpm at 26 miles/h
3th gear 2000-3000 rpm at 38 miles/h

My question is whatis the shifting point in RPM and SPEED for
each gear ???
And of course when engine cold it get a bit higher in RPM !!!!
Brought it to Acura dealer but the service manager said everything
is normal since no Codes or Lights and it shifts at the right speed.....

What do you guys think ?

It depends on how you drive. I can get my car to shift at 2K or 5K consistantly. Depending on how far I push the gas.

Unless you are experiencing slipping on shifts your tranny is likely fine.

Maybe it's only in my head ...but I feel like it shifts in bit to high .
The RPM should drop when you shift to the next gear or it when up a bit then shift ?
When engine is cold I feel the 3th gear raise around 250rpm before going to the
4 th gear.

Is this normal ?Could you guys confirm when your car shift from 3th to 4 th gear ?

Thanks

nothing to worry about...thats normal...sometimes when you drive down a hill it will seem like it driving by itself but its the grade logic in the tranny working...shift points look normal and its all about how you drive....

you should see my shift point

You're over thinking this. The way I drive, normally, my car shifts at 2K. I like to save gas. Most people here drive like their race car drivers and will shift 3-4K.

When I get on the highway my car shifts at 5-6K. That doesn't have anything to do with the tranny, but how I'm driving.

Unless you see a 1K spike between shifts you're really hunting for a problem.

Couldn't edit my post.

You should not be judging anything about the performance of your tranny when it's cold. The TQ converter doesn't lock out when the motor is cold to try and bring the temps up. So it's going to shift completely differently.

This is a little video i made a few years back of the trans slip that is the start of the failure.

Pay attention to the tach as it shifts.

And that's actually fairly lightly. In the odessy I drove with a slipping tranny, you could get 500-1500rpm spikes between shifts.

The magnetic nut? It collects metal shavings. I'm about due to change my tranny fluid, we're coming up on 25K.

So it shouldn't drop a whole 1 rpm when it shifts? I'll be checking mine when I leave work...sad to say, I think mine does this. I mainly feel that going from 2nd to 3rd.

I've driven a few fords that have brand new tranny that seems to float between shifts. Not unlike your video Kris.

Yea, but on the TL that is not the way they shift. All 5 that failed shifted like that about 1k before they died.

In your video, when it shifted, it dropped about 1rpm. Or was that not the point of showing? Was it that it didn't shift until 4k?

Of course when it shifts the RPM is supposed to drop. Thats the point of shifting. The point of the video is that the RPM spikes up a few hundred AS it shifts. That is the early stage/sign of the trans failure

lol...I know the rpms are supposed to drop, but I wasn't sure how much (if there was even a set amount). Ok, so I just need to look for the spike(s). Thanks,

Kris : were you shifting from 3th to 4th in the video ? My trans sometime spike up a few
hundred RPM as it shifts when engine cold ...when hot it looks like it shifts find for now....
I can feel the car shifts at a higher RPM from 1th to 4th gear for the same forward speed
of the car .... Maybe is the early stage of the trans going out......
Just wish the car will not die in a middle of Canada winter ..........

that was 2-3 where the trans problem shows the most. When cold it will shift later.

2 or 3 were before there was a known issue, or a recall/warranty extension. (i had one covered at 115k before there was a warranty extension)

Kris : any CEL when your RPM spike up a bit when going from 2th to 3th gear ????
This morning when engine half cold my RPM spike up a bit from 3th to 4th gear ......then gone when the ATF was warm ????

Does it takes a CEL to pop up to prove to Dealer that we have a early stage of slipage???

No CEL and No, but it does help. It just has to be showing symptoms of doing something it shouldnt.
