Trans break down? Solution inside pay me first!!!!
I take Paypal BTW.... J/K------- What the crap am i talking about??? hmmm i figured out today that u really don't need 5th gear anyways
well let me tell you this solution once and for all.... drive in 4th then if and only if your going fast than 60 or 65 depending on load conditions (vary with with weight, etc, other factors) shift to 5th (OVERDRIVE) ... driving around town today i left it in 5th about 30 .... (does this once and a while BTW) but it skip a shift from 2-4 i was like hey i did not tell you to do that TL!!!!! slap it back in 4th all is well....
WHY did it do this? think yall.... Obviously there is too much hydro pressure in these transmissions fooling the computer blah blah blah confusing the transmission Stressing the transmission then boom it goes bad

The problem is the 3rd gear clutch packs, and the 2nd gear overheating. Having the oil jet kit installed solves the 2nd gear problem.
I would say the only thing to help extend the life of the tranny is the 3x3 flush once a year and having a tranny cooler installed.

sure we don't need 5th gear, but some of us like the extra gas mileage. plus you shouldn't have to pay that much attention to driving a luxury car. defeats the point of shelling out the money to get it in the first place. otherwise thanks anyway for trying. as mentioned though, hydropressure is not the main cause of failure of the transmissions.

i can sort of help this looking at it this way..... Lot of u guys on this board think these cars have gobs of torque and they do not.... for example trucks pull boats before a car does because the engine is designed for pulling(torque=tire grip).... as with the acura your workload is more horsepower in the transmission cause 3.2 liter V6
really bogs out at low torque highway speeds considering these cars weigh a little heavy so if you have lots of stuff or drive around 4 people your putting more of a workload/stress on the engine.... Horsepower is greater for smaller cars so why did they put a 5th gear in the acura tl? these engines are design to spin up to 7000 safely (i gotta check the gear ratios again)... to clear the confusion up run around with 4 gear then shift to 5 (overdrive) at 60 so there is less torque/workload on your drivetrain ---- meaning 5:4 ratio (engine speed slower than wheels turning)
still with me?
YOUR CONFUSING YOUR TRANSMISSION and COMPUTER from it shifting back and forth back and forth and so on Wearing it out by putting more hydro pressure on your shift points.... Done

edit sorry -----as with the acura your workload is more horsepower and not torque in the transmission cause 3.2 liter V6 has twice as much HP than torque and so your basically lugging at low rpms till you reach higher rpms --- <now read above> SmoothCruizer

DoneSorry but you Obviously dont know whats going on in our trans, Nor do you fully understand how things work. Acura added 5th gear NOT because they have higher HP and lower TQ, but as to be able to better space gearing to make things more efficient. 5th gear has NOTHING to do with our trannies problems.
If your driving at a speed where the car is hunting between 4th and 5th alot drop it to D4. (around 50mph) other wise it shouldnt be hunting for the right gear much at all.
Oh and Hydro pressure (as you call it) can all be controlled by solenoids and valve bodies.
Cruizer - we appreciate you trying bro, but we allready know for a fact that the main failure mode of the transmissions is the 3rd gear clutch failure. this has been documented by many acura/honda mechanics. i can see what you're trying to reason but if you think about the way a torque converter works then shifting to 5th gear at 60mph would by your example put more pressure on the internals then doing it at 45 or so when the car wants to on it's own. plus as kris said, the pressure is all regulated by the valve body and solenoids anyway. in the end whether you shift manually (either gate shifting or SS) or automatically, the tranny will still fail if it wants to.
the 5th gear is really for gas mileage, otherwise it doesn't serve any other purpose i can think of. well, who knows, maybe it's other purpose is to reduce overall wear on the engine if you figure the majority of people will ultimately be in 5th gear during any drive they take and it equates to less RPMs maintained.
keep thinking though. we always need a few good thinkers around this board.
