Tranny went ...question...
Yesterday mid afternoon I joined the faulty tranny club. Went through some very strange shifting for about 3 mins then the lights came on. I was lucky I was only 2 blocks away from the dealership.
I have a question though. I was under the impression that when this problem first started..they were replacing the trannies with the same crappy ones. Then the housing was "fixed" or " redesigned" to allow more oil to lube the proper areas.
When I dropped of my car they told me that I would get an old tranny housing with new parts in it. Does this fix the prob or is it just a patch until it happens again at a later date?
BTW: Oil jet was installed and the car has 102,000 km on it.

they redesigned the internal parts and reuse the same housing. The oil jet kit had nothing to do with saving your tranny from failing. There are 2 seperate failure issues and the oiljet is for the one that never happens

They never reallly fixed the problem. My second tranny died just 4 days ago at 140K.
I have heard the new ones last abit longer but it all depends on your luck, I'd say!
Good Luck with your new tranny.

My 2nd just went too
Got my 2nd trans at 100,000 (under warranty) in Sept. 2003 before the "official" recall. Am now at 173,000 and the tranny is definitely failing so I got 25% less mileage with the replacement. Had two trans flushes the past 18,000 miles. Fluid is brown. So far the dealer is of no help. Sent a letter to Honda Corp last week. We'll see what they say. Virtually all my miles are rural highway. Minor "city" driving.

Well, now I'm really confused. I'm looking right at an NHTSA recall from their website regarding component "Power Train: Automatic Transmission", along with notices I received in the mail. Are you saying that because it's considered a "safety" recall that Acura is not guaranteeing replacement with a corrected transmission ... just inspection?
This recall was issued 7 months after I had my trans replaced. How do I prove if they just put the exact same original specs trans in my vehicle and never corrected it? Or do they not have to correct it?
By the way, this is a 2000 TL and I have read thru the entire 25-pg post here on trannys. Should I take this conversation there? Thanks for your reply.

There was a recall, it was simply for the addition of a part. Not to recall and replace the tranny. Honda on their own extended the warranty on the tranny to 7 years or 100k miles (the cars odo and build date) they up until recently were putting the same trannies back in, recently they came up with updated parts and the oil jet kit was installed internally (the recall is for a oil jet kit which was a external design) That part was not to fix the part that keeps making out trannies fail. about all you can do is get into contact with acura client services and see if they can good will you sometihing since your tranny was replaced before the recall??

Customer Service ...
Acura Customer Service (toll-free #) told me to write to American Honda Corp in Torrance, which is where I'm at now. Where do you find exactly what they were supposed to do? In the service bulletin?
I don't believe I ever received the "oiljet kit". Plus I understand that addresses a separate issue anyway. My warranty service repair says that they replaced transmission (does not say new or rebuilt) and also listed under parts is regulator assy, ECU, warranty A/T Ki and fluid. That's it.
I'm willing to try the small claims court side, as I really don't want to go in debt for a new car yet ... I try to buy something that will last about 8-10 years.
Heck, my 88 Legend has 340,000 on it right now and it would cost me a ton less to fix that up to drive again. I was still getting compliments on it up until I bought the new car as it still looks good (red 2dr coupe) ... just has some mechanical issues that need attention. And, I loved to drive that car!

You dont have any recourse in small claims. Its not a matter of you not recieving the correct tranny. they upped the warranty and kept trying different things.
You wont find what they did. I found out from my 4th tranny(which i ended up paying for 2 of myself) failure when i rebuilt it. We discovered they had divverent part #'s and different parts on a few of them (they looked different) The revised parts were in feb of 2005 so far we havent seen them failing, but its early and only time will tell

They should replace it for free! I think honda got a bad rap for this one. Resale values are really low on this car...which is not good for selling new ones...one of Hondas greatest attributes. I've had 5 hondas and never had a problem! I've had 2 trannies. I just hit 102000....crossing my fingers
