Tranny RANT

I dropped my 2003 TL-S at the dealer on Monday for the tranny inspection recall. I just got off the phone with them and the service advisor informed me that they are having to replace the tranny and they are installing it now.

My problem is this: Why is Acura treating some 2003 owners differently than others???? They obviously didn't do anything to the 2003 tranny to fix the problem, so why is my warranty not extended to 100K like all the other poor suckers that were stupid enough to have faith in Acura.

I am now on that "replace tranny every few thousand miles" road and I don't drive my car many miles (I only have 22K and my car is 2 years old). Unless Acura treats me as fairly as other customers I'll have to dump the car at a loss after 4 years instead of keeping it 8 years. It would be INSANE for me to keep this car with the tranny not covered.

I'm so pissed I could scream!

Not sure why you are not getting the "extended warranty" for the tranny, but my dealer gave my 2003 TLS the 7 year 100k mile extended warranty.

The service advisor said my 2003 VIN was not part of the 100K warranty extension (he checked on their warranty computer). What's this about all 2003's being extended???? Anyone have anything in writing??? Please do tell!!!

I think only the '99-02 are fully extended, and only some '03s got the extended warranty. The recall and the extended warranty are 2 different things. I don't believe that the '04s affected by the recall have a warranty on the tranny beyond the standard 50k miles.

I think you're right.

But that's just messed up though, since all 2nd gen trannies post '99 are C-R-A-P! As evidenced by the original poster of this thread who fell out of the extended warranty but had his tranny blow.

Acura needs to step up to the plate and cover all '03 trannies.

I agree with you that it's wrong for Acura not to take care of this. At least the recall (albeit 3 or 4 years too late) is a step in the right direction. I do think it's a bit scary that the '04s are included in it, though, but I sincerely hope that owners of '04s don't have to put up with the same crap.

I used to own an '02 Type S, and now I'm a happy Lexus owner. Just got fed up with the Acura bullshit and sub-par service. My dealer was actually pretty good, but my only experience with Acura Client (Dis)Services convinced me to never buy an Acura again. Besides, the quality of the car was absolute crap. Interestingly enough, I didn't have recurring tranny problems. It was just everything else that was wrong. All my Honda Accords (the TL was my 4th Honda product) put the TL to shame in every way except power! I honestly was expecting more from them. They're supposed to be Honda's luxury car division after all...

Good luck to all of you with the tranny issue.

I bought my car in December of 2002. It is an '03 model year assembled November of '02.

Dealer still has my car, which makes 1 week today. Oh, and just in case anyone cares, I'm now ashamed to drive an Acura.....I used to have pride in my ride, now I feel like its a P.O.S.

if you aren't paying for the new tranny, what is wrong with what they've done for you? If they are charging you, then you have a valid complaint. Otherwise, WTF?! If your car has the same warranty that it did when you bought it AND they are correcting a known transmission problem, I don't understand why you feel your car is anything less than it was before.
