There is no internal replaceable filter you can change. There is a small external filter. (not sure if the 99 has it but the 00+ does) no one really replaces it. Drain fills are all you can do, stay away from flushes.

ULEV is Ultra Low Emission Vehicle. 1 or 2 states were the only ones to get it (cali for sure)

Really? small external filter wow! imma look for that! im try to drain some of the ATF out every time i change my engine oil now. And why stay away from flushes? i know that if you take it to the dealer they charge you like 200 for it the last time i call them. Hey Fsttyms1 i read some of the post that you have, that saying something like the Auto tranny cooler? do you know how to install it?

Well i guess im uncle lucky that he got one In Mass for 3800$$$ and that thing come in 5 speed auto! what the fuck, im jealous. WHERE YOU FROM ANY WAY? Over here is like -5 in the northeast, cold as hell man. thank for the reply

Your uncle's TL has the 5spd auto tranny, not something I'd be too jealous of ! Considering that your '99 has the older style 4spd which is actually much more troublefree and durable than the 2000 TL and up model's "problematic" 5spd automatics. This has been well documented as a fact, even being subject to an official recall. So, are you still jealous ? Hey man, Feel lucky that you got yours ! If you are not experiencing any issues with your tranny, just drain and replace Honda fluid in your tranny's 3 qt. pan. Don't kick a sleeping dog, especially an old one !

Its not something that is necessary to really change. Its a waste to drain fill it every oil change.1 maybe 2 times a year would be ok. Stay away from flushes Because HONDA says not to. Yes i know how to install it, i wouldnt waste my time on it unless you are towing or racing. It doesnt do any thing for the trans.

There is more than 3 quarts in the TL trans. Its 7.6. Only 3.2 quarts come out of the drain plug when you pull it.

Oops !, Sorry if the 3 quarts which I stated was in the tranny's fluid pan misled anybody. What I do is buy 7 quarts @ my local Honda dealership, then perform a drain and fill, replacing 3+ in the spring and the other 3+ again in the fall of each year. That works out to about 8-10k between changes. It's hard for me to get that extra .2 amount right ! Just be careful as you don't want to overfill and choke the torque-converter with too much fluid.

Keeps your trans fluid clean. There are lots of screens in the trans that can get clogged and you won't be able to clean them unless you do an trans overhaul. Just changed mine a few months ago.

I personally did not see any noticable perfomance change. The previous owner took the car to Acura dealership to have the fluid changed every 20k miles so the trans was well taken care of. When I changed the fluid, it was pretty clean. But when I changed the filter, there were very small particles in old filter. I would change it even though your trans is not giving problems. There is a by-pass valve in the filter so if it becomes clogged, it will circulate unfiltered fluid. I have 86k on my original trans.
