Tranny design change

Honda/Acura was plagued with tranny design issues and subsequent higher failure rate on 1999-2004 cars. Is it safe to assume they have taken care of this issue and on cars made after 2005 is not likely to see the same problems. How many miles on an average these cars last? Can you get 200,000-250,000 miles on these cars made after 2010?

The problematic issues are from 01 to 04 everything else last what it can last given the maintenance...

Does this apply to Honda Civics(2001-04) or it was mainly an issue with larger engines such as Odyssy, Acura, Accord?

Mainly the 5 Speeds from a V6 equipped Honda and Acura..
I cant speak for the 4cyl transmissions as I don´t have that info.

Actually I would say for the TLs it is essentially from 2000-2006. Although the 2nd gen with the 5 speeds (2000-2003) habe the highest rate of failure, the 3rd gen 2004-06 also had high failure rates. Other Honda's and Acuras like the early 2000s MDX, the Odysseys from that time frame too. Also 6cyl accords from late 90s/early 2000s

^ 05s and 06 had way lower failure ratings than the 01 to 04..
With "01 to 04" I meant EVERYTHING Honda and Acura made with a V6 and a 5 Speed AUTO: MDX, Pilot, Accord, TL, CL, Odyssey.

Ride experience is crispy with Acuras. It is scary when you are going on a highway on long trips and suddenly transmission shifts to 2nd gear with tractor tailors behind you. Is it safe to assume whatever problem was there with tranny is non existent at least with tranny's build after 2010?

Your scenario is HIGHLY Unlikely though. Only way to get to highway speeds is by getting out of 3rd gear into 4th and 5th, If your trans is on its way out it will SLIP WAYYYYYYYYYYY BEFORE getting to Highway Speeds. Remember that torque is what makes the gear clutch slips and at highway speeds torque is very low, But in the city in Stop and Go traffic Torque is High so the chances of having the trans slip before going to highway speeds is very likely. This is all from experience, I had 2 failing transmissions.

Now 2010? you can buy any Honda and Acura after 06 and they will be fine, The transmission was re-designed in 05 (Band-Aid) and by 06 it was a completely different setup.

I know someone with an '05 TL that replaced the tranny at around 100K. But, I don't think they changed the fluid regularly.

I have read so many reports of "was almost about to be rear ended or almost got killed" because of the transmission malfunction that was one more reason I decided against getting transmission repaired. It wasn't easy for me to find a mechanic who would be familiar with AV6 Swap, other wise I would have given that a shot on a car otherwise I loved.

^ I think what you may be referring to was a sudden downshift on the highway. This was a different issue due to 2nd gear overheating. Acura had a recall to install an oil jet kit to provide trans fluid directly to that gear. Cases of this type of failure was way less than the main issue of what is typically the 3rd clutch failing and clogging up the trans passageways

Common failure list:

1998-2002 Honda Accord I4
1998-2002 Honda Accord V6
2003-2005 Honda Accord V6
(Units after March 2005 are fine)

1999-2004 Honda Oddesey
2005 Honda Oddesey

2005-2005 Honda Pilot

2000-2003 Acura TL
2004-2005 Acura TL

1997-1999 Acura CL I4
1997-1999 Acura CL V6
2001-2003 Acura CL

2001-2003 Acura MDX

There may some issues in the early-mid 2000's RL's, but I'm not aware!!!

To my knowledge 06 was the last year for the TL to use the 3 shaft design, Then 07 for the Accord V6 and 06 for the Odyssey, then the 4 shaft design came along and all I've read was rarely some issues with the torque converter.
4 shaft design was introduced in the 03 MDX or 05 RL If I'm not mistaking.
