If you park on an incline (even a slight one) with an automatic tranny and don't use the parking brake before you put the car in park, you put a big strain on the transmission. You will definitely get a clunk no matter which gear you select (forward or reverse). When you do this you're using the engine and tranny as a brake instead of the discs. Puts a bad load on the tranny. For those that don't know, the proper way to park an automatic on a grade (if the car rolls even a little bit in one direction after putting it in park, you should be using this method):

1. Stop the car where you want to park using the regular brake.
2. With the car in gear and your foot on the regular brake, apply the parking brake.
3. Put car in park, release regular brake.

When you first go to drive, you should reverse the order. Never release the brake first:

1. Put foot on regular brake.
2. Put car in gear (R or D5 or SS)
3. Release parking brake
4. Release regular brake

This way you are making the brake system hold the weight of the car against the incline. They're designed to do this.

It very well can happen. All the more reason to use the parking brake.
