Welcome

Check the transmission fluid level, Engine warm and off on a level surface.
Only use Honda ATF DW-1 nothing else.
2-3 slip is a sign that the 3rd clutch pack is worn out, very common.

Check for codes even if the check engine light is off.

If code is P0740 then its game over.. Trans is toasted from the defective 3rd Gear Clutch Pack, which is very common..

Welcome to Acurazine.

P0740 = "Torque Converter Clutch Malfunction"

P0740 on our cars rarely means that the converter is malfunctioning.. The Main issue is the debris that the 3rd gear clutch pack releases clogging the TQ Solenoid which eventually throws a P0740, That added to the fact 3rd gear slips = DEAD TRANS.

You are looking at a 3500 to 5000 bucks fix..

Did you buy it from a dealer? I would look into it although I'm sure there was no warranty. Maybe lemon law? Otherwise yeah, do the AV6 swap

Well in that case to answer your question its both torque converter and transmission.
Look into a low mileage 06-07 AV6 trans and have a look at what needs to be done here: https://acurazine.com/forums/second-...n-swap-905115/

Since you have all gears, That tells me the TC overheated and damaged the clutch inside sending debris through the small valve body filters therefore clogging them up overtime.
3rd gear is a separate problem and eventually will clog up the main internal filter, Leaving you with no transmission.

The money you may use on towing might as well put it towards the av6 trans in my opinion.

OP

Your trans has less than 30k miles. You should ask the previous owner if the trans is still under warranty by chance?

You should try trouble shooting the code... "Torque converter clutch/open"

BTW... P0740 Code - Pick-up Control System

Is the D5 blinking or MIL on?

My 03 type S had the P0740 code and the TC was shot. I put in a reman TC from RockAuto and no code for the past 10k miles.

Although in the op case its most likely a situation that both the trans and TC are bad.
