Top Speed
Hi everyone! i was always curious to ask other tl owners about top speed on tl: see i have 2002 tl that hardly go to 90MPH (and only after putting all new tires, full ballansing and alignment!) before that it was 70.. and another 1999 thats flys to 90 in no time but then moves slowly to 100 and that's it. so is that normal for these cars? thanx
I found myself alone on a nice stretch of interstate last night, and got my 03 TL-S up to 105 with no problem - barely at 3,000RPM on the tach. I could have easily gone faster, but didn't want to miss my exit. That's my fastest in this car thus far, but I've only had it a couple of months.
i'm new,and i didn't find anything thru search button,i tried different entries that might relate to speed issue. i did egr port yesterday, new cat. belts eng mounts(tho that's pretty irrelevant). all the same. i had excelaration problem with my M5-and that was the air sensor meter-once replaced fixed the problem, but tls don't carry such a thing(according to autozone and online part stores). both cars run drive, idle and shift smooth as butter.
spark plugs NGK Iridium, air filter good? all the normal things checked?
with new cat,, there may have been an O2 sensor issue? ckecked?
try an ECU reset- wont hurt and might help
remove CLOCK fuse on passenger side of cabin for a minute then reinsert
thats the secret backup power to the ECU

though it gets there A LOT faster. If i could find a way to get rid of it id do it in a heart beat.

seafoam wouldnt hurt~ but I wanted to hear why tires and alignment made it go from 70 to 90 top speed ---get a feel what the larger issues are
Seafoam will clean crud and a lot of techs use it to get a baseline running condition then be able to troubleshoot driveabilty issues
Was the egr port cleaned by removing the intake manifold?
all bolts torqued exact spec?
a vacuum leak anywhere will cause big problems and the car to idle poorly
On the motor mounts- some years have a vac line to front and rear mount- if not connected...vac leak, or if poly mounts used must plug vac lines

i think one (or more) of the wheels were out of balance so it went nice to 70 after which it would shake. so after performing all that i can safely go to 90 but now the gas pedal allmost on the floor but there's no excelaration going on.and like i said before: two of my tls the same way tho one of them had very recently done egr port cleaning, seafoaming and new engine mounts and ecu (radio chip taken out) and nothing changed. the only thing i didn't actually do are the sparkplugs. could they influence the car that much? thanx everybody for all the help, guys!!

And no there isnt a ecu lock at 90. Our ECUs dont have replaceable chips, and reprogramming them isnt really something that can be done.

Mine's "only" been to 115.
Coincidentlly, within 12 hours, a tire blew out. Glad that didn't happen at 115 mph. Not saying that one caused the other. I am saying, better safe than sorry.

thats the thing I always say about high speed-
Do you know what to do to control the car in a tire blowout situation at speeds above 100 120?
If not- get some track day instruction before going more than 80
otherwise an exciting experience may occur~

in my younger days on my way back to virginia (where i was stationed) from kentucky it was broad daylight and I-64 was clear in morehead KY there was a mercedes (dunno the model) and him and i were playing around, the highest i went was 135 and still was going well. dunno why i didn't go faster cause i certainly could, i guess i was lucky i didn't get caught or noone got hurt.
