Top Speed!

I,m sure I'll get flamed for this but fvck it!

I had to see what this thing could do so I went up and down a 5 mile stretch of the freeway about 6 times to see if there were any cops. Also made sure there was very little traffic. I did one last lap and got back on the freeway and hit 155MPH and the car still wanted to go but I didnt have the kahunas. This is deffenitly the fastest I've ever been and deffenitly the last time I'll go that fast. I don'yt know what I was thinking.
But for what it's worth the car remained just as smooth at 155 as it does at 85.

O.K. go ahead, flame me, tell me how stupid and dangerous that is.

Hmm, was the speed limiter removed on the 03? I thought we had a governed top speed of 147.

How'd you managed to blow a tranny on a 2003? Didn't they just come out this month? :wow:

Doing 155 in a brand new car might do it.

Ya whatever happened to 147? Its by law becuase thats what the tires are rated at. I beleive we have V-rated tires on the '02s which are rated at 147Mph, which is where the electric governor is set at. Do the 2003's have upgraded tires? Would you mind checking 03TLTYPES? Its in your user manul under tire mantainence. The letter at the end of the tire spec. This is interesting, that is d@mn fast man.

I was about to say that. The stock tires are rated at 149 MPH actually if I'm not mistaken. But I think the limiter is at 155 MPH. Probably not a good idea to go past 149 MPH on the stock rubber

Two words: speedometer error.

You were probably going no faster than 147 MPH. Speedometer error can be as large as 10% at 55 MPH and more than 15% above 85 MPH, and it always indicates faster than actual speeds.

If your speedo error is 15%, your speedo will indicate 170 MPH at the speed limited 147 MPH actual speed.

One reliable way to determine your speed is to use a GPS receiver and read out your ground speed.

I think our speedometer are very acurate. I did a test were there was 100 miles by the highway markers. By the time I got to the last marker, my odometer said 99.8 miles. I was going between 99-101 mph and it took me 59 minutes 46 seconds at the 100 mile highway marker. There was no traffic at all and I was using cruise control.

PS: the reason I said 99-101 moph if because there were a couple of low briges and the speedometer would go done to 99 and up to 101 mph when going up and down the briges.

Top speed on my car was 149 mph (99 TL) This was test on a different time. I hit the same speed in a CL type S and TL type S loaners. All with stock tires.

Bitium: if I'm not mistaken, the odometer is controlled separately from the speedometer, and its error tolerance seems to be tighter than the speedo.

The speedo error may be small in your particular TL, but since there isn't a federal guideline for speedo accuracy, I wouldn't be surprised if the speedo error is all over the map for a group of TL's.

Anyway, I'd sooner believe that 03TLTYPES's speedo has a large error than accept the idea that his 147 MPH speed limiter has somehow disengaged itself!

exactly, spedos are very inaccurate at those speeds. It will probably be around 5-7% off at those speeds.

Maybe it is a stupid question, but do the stock rubber explode at speed above 147mph?

Knowing that 1 mph = 1.609 kmh, 03TLTYPES must have gone at 249.4 kmh!

In our canadian model, the speedometer stops at 240 kmh which is 149 mph.

Are US TL-S potentially faster?

That sounds like a much more reasonable explination. It would be agaisnt the law (correct me if im wrong) to allow the car to exceed the tire's specs. Geuss I'll have to bring the ol' GPS along when I do my insano run .

I once did 210km/h on Hwy 407 around here. The car still wanted to go faster. Now I live in Canada so miles/hr doesn't exist here so don't :flamer: me. For any locals reading this, I did this trip from Square One mall at Mississauga to Pacific mall at Markham in 15 mins.

Flying...

Damn 03, I guess they fixed your tranny AND your wheel bearings... because at that speed your old wheels would have flown off!

I guess that run must have helped you to vent frustration and fall back in love with your ride?

I would seriously doubt that the speed limiter would have been removed in the 03 model. NOTHING else has changed, so why would they change that restriction? As for the tires, they are the same also, I have personally inspected them at the lots. The 149mph speed rating is BEST case... the speed ratings are derated with heat, weight, inflation, etc. Who knows when one might unravel... but I'd like to have a five point harness, a helmet, arm restraints, a neck collar, fire suit, etc, etc, and a roll bar before I go that fast on the freeway waiting for some loser to slide in front of me. BUT I STILL GOTTA SAY YEE-HAW WE OWN A NICE CAR! If it wasn't lifting off of the ground at that speed, I'm impressed! I also agree that the speedometer was proabably reading a bit out of calibration, but still....

As far as it being illegal to let a car go faster than the rating of the tires... I've never heard of that before. It must be some new law or something. Because like I said, 149mph tires are BEST case, they are typically derated from that in a lot of driving situations. And what about the older cars that had speedometers that always went to 120mph with POS tires rated for like 90mph? I had an old 1963 chevy bel-air up to 118mph once trying to top it out when I was 18 years old with what I would hate to think of as tires today... not to mention the loose steering Kids are stupid!

How many miles do you have on the car now 03TLTYPES? I've got a new 02 that I just passed 400 miles on and still haven't had it over 80mph or 3000-4000 rpm... just wondering...

Well, "99-101 mph and it took me 59 minutes 46 seconds at the 100 mile highway marker" also proves that the SPEEDOMETER is acurate.

The speedometer had to be acurate to drive 100 miles in 59 minutes and 46 seconds.

It takes 60 minutes at 100mph to reach 100 miles. Get it.

A good tip.. Go completely west on the 407 at night, and when you pass mississauga, where it turns into ashphalt from concrete. That place is the bomb, there are these stretches where I kept 240 for a good few seconds...

Just becareful! I did it on Z rated tires BTW

Yes, Bitium, I get it--but what I'm saying is that the only thing this proves is that your speedometer is accurate. Since there are no Federal guidelines on the accuracy of speedometers, I wouldn't be surprised if 03TLTYPES's speedometer is more than 7% off at 147 MPH.

I seriously doubt they changed anything on the 03 except the floor maps say TL-S instead of ACURA.
No bull$hit the speedo said 155. If I had the kahunas I'd take a pic but I doubt I'll be going that fast for a while! I'm sure my speedo is off 5-7% like some of you suggested.

I have 3400 miles on my 6 week old TL-S. I know, I drive alot (part of the job). I had the tranny swapped at 1700 and the wheel bearings, hubs and halfshafts replaced at 2800. I did give about 500 miles for the hubs, wb's and halfshafts to break in and ruffly 1000 for the new tranny.

But yes the 155 definitly restored my pride in the ride!

I assume you meant "mats" rather than "maps".

If so, is that true? I would much rather have factory mats that say "TL-S" rather than "ACURA". Of course, this is just my personal taste; YMMV...

wow, thats fast

155 on the speedo is ballsy regardless if you were actually going 140 or 150. I've gone 120 in my galant (dumb, definitely), but it took forever to get there! I just hit about 600 miles on my TLS earlier this weekend so I started to open her up a little. I hit 100mph this weekend and the car was still pulling. I am trying to restrain myself cuz I don't want a ticket and more importantly I don't want to put anyone's life in danger, including myself. I also don't want to abuse the car which is why I've only gone to 5700 rpms so far and only about twice. I will admit that this car can move, especially considering its size! Still loving it!

On a different note I got my first scratch and I was the dumba$$ who did it! I was washing my car when I accidentally scratched the bottom (very small) with the hose. Gotta go buy some touch up paint now!

It does. It feels like you have the same control at 155mph and 85mph. Of course you don't, but the car is very stable at those speeds.

so a same turn at 155mph and 85mph will have the same outcome since it has the same control at 155mph and 85mph?

im sure its stable enough to stay on the road...but i duno about VERY stable.

2 things for you. Use common sense and dirve at 150mph. When you do that, say anything you want.

Of course it won't have the same outcome, dah

Well we know who the smart one is here Bitium. If he would have interpreted (spelling) what he read he would see that it clearly says, "just as smooth at 155 as it does at 85."

Every thread that mentions going fast seems to descend into insults and name-calling. Will this one be any different, I wonder?

So far so good huh daverman! I'm actually surprised I have not been flamed 1000 times over but maybe that's because I admitted that it was stupid and dangerous right from the begining.

Let's keep it clean guys!

Its the most cost effective mod available . If you havn't taken off your resonator I'd recomend that too though man. It produces the exact same effect as CAI, but its free! It doesnt look quite as kewl, but hey you get what you pay for.
