You will always need a filter. I hope you're not running without one. As for makes/brands...your only options for the drop in tpye filters are K&N and Comptech. If I was in your scenario, I'd go for the Comptech.

Did u take off the whole airbox assembly or just the airbox resonator the behind the bumper?...if u are driving around with the whole airbox off and no filter, u are doing serious damage to your engine!!...I also removed the resonator and replaced the OEM filter with a K&N drop in filter...the only part that u should have removed was the resonator(part behind the bumper and below the airbox)!

They are both about the same price. You could get comptech here

Sure you could drive with the stock filter as much as you want.

Filters are very easy to install. In 99 TL's there are 4 screws and open the top of the box, replaced filter and close box. That's it. It should be the same for the 00+ models.

If you get the comptech the red part goes facing the bottom(floor).

oh! and 1 more question: since i can drive around with the stock filter as much as i want, would there be an actual benefit from the comptech filter? thanks

Well the stock filter won't last forever since is not reusable. Without the resornator the filter will get more dirty faster. So cut in half the time you were supposed to replaced your air filter. Look in your owner's manual. If it is about time, you could either buy another stock paper filter or replaced with a reusable/washable filter like comptech. The benifit you will have to find out yourself. It should increase the air flow thus increasing performance.

I have the K&N drop in filter and I can feel a little more performance over stock, people will say that there is no performance gain with drop in filters but I can definitely feel a difference!

uh, yes you do. i know it would be possible to take it off by jacking it up, removing the wheel, and trying to fit my hand waaaaaayyyy back there. it is so much easier to take off the bumper

I seem to recall two pipes going down out of the airbox on mine when I dropped in my K&N filter. Does anyone know if this component is different on the Type S?

Is the same resornator, I believe is smaller on the type S.

OK - I went out and took off my air cleaner cover to check my sanity....

You are absolutely --- correct! There's only 1 downpipe.

The good news is that my K&N filter, with a little over 8k miles on it looks...... NEW (ok w/ a little dirt). Go figure.....

What is the real change?

I own a 2000 Civic Si and one of the first Mods I did was to remove the resonator box. It only added, what I thought, to be a couple butt horse power and it didn't really change the sound. Now, when I put my CAI on that car it was a different story. The CAI made a noticable difference in horesepower and it is loud as all get out. I mean REALLY loud in VTEC.

So, here is my question: How loud is the car with just the resonator box removed? I like the idea of removing 10lbs of extra plastic, but I do not want my wifes car to sound like it is eating the road in half.

Not loud enough to bother your wife. It will get a little louder and deeper on vtec, but nothing like the CAI or SRI.

Sweet sounds of the TL

My 16 year old son talked me into taking off the resonator first. It took us two hours and we had to remove the front bumper first to get it out through the bottom. But we got it back together and it was very satisfying to complete this job. We notice a little bit of difference in the power but not much. And there was not a significant difference in the sound.

Next we just took out the airbox and put on a CAI. Now this makes a big difference.

It is not that noisy at all at driving speeds, but when the RPM's get up there first you can hear a small whistling sound and then a low rumble. When it gets to 6000rpm it is loud and cool.

Back to 2-3000rpm, not a big difference again.

We are ready for more mods that do not cost an arm/leg and will give some perfomance improvements.
