Thumbs up Took on a 540i 6spd.

My friends and I just got back from the golf range.

As you all know, I have a pretty well modded TL and my friend has a stock 97 BMW 540i Sport (6spd.) I wanted to know how well I'd do so I asked him to race me, he agreed as he too was curious as to how fast my car was after all this money spent. Let me stress that I knew that I wasn't going to beat him and just wanted to know how bad the 540 was going to beat me. I must admit my friend is a pretty good stick driver as he taught me how to powershift and other stick tricks. I had just me and my golf bag and he had another passenger and 2 golf bags for the record. We came to a red light and we took off!

0-40: almost neck to neck
40-60: he was slowly pulling away
by the time we hit 80 he was 3/4 car length ahead of me.

For those that live in NOVA or DC area, this was on S. Van Dorn Street going northbound.

We hit a freeway (495) he was ahead of me and he and I gunned it. I faired really well until we hit like 110mph the you can see the torque of his BMW pulling away from me. At worst, I was only 1 1/2 car length behind him till we hit 110 then by the time we hit 120 he was like 3 cars ahead.

We pulled off an exit to get drinks at a 7-11 and he was like "damn, I though I was going to kill you but you hung in there really well" I replied, "damn, I thought I was going to get killed too, but I'm pretty impressed".

Let me reiterate that I knew that I wasn't going to win but I kept up with him pretty well and as a matter of fact, I was neck to neck with him from 0 to about 40 and only 3/4 of a car lenght behind by the time we hit 80. Now based on this fact, I have to assume my car will do 1/4 mile in the mid to low 14's and 0-60 in very low 6 or maybe very high 5's (the last number is kinda wishful thinking). So for those that have headers, intake, and exhaust...man, you can take on more cars that I personally thought. Oh, my friend has very low mileage on his car as he kept it in mint condition. Now it's time to get NOS and see how well I do against him...I should beat him then.

The extra weight he carried really helped you a lot IMHO! But damn.. your TL is fast... I played with a 540 steptronic, and he killed me badly... I think he is running high 5 even thought it's an automatic, the 6 speed 540 should do low of mid 5 sec.

I agree, I think the extra weight definately helped. I also agree that the 6spd runs inthe low to mid 5's. I'm kinda optimistic on taking a GS400 now. I probably won't win but I'll stay with him since I firmly believe the 540 6spd. will beat the GS400. Hopefully, next time I'll catch a 540i with 4 people in it!

Thanx! Yeah it rained and earlier today I was out and my TCS was going off the roof. When my friend and I raced, it was pretty dry as he said that his TCS went off when he shifted to 2nd.

I don't know, I think AC is just big enough to share the loses, unlike the rest of us who never lose ...yeah right.

Sounds like the mods were well worth it AC. Boy do I look forward to doing the performance enhancing mods on my TL! Now if only i could get a few things for Christmas...

Hey AC, do you think it was worth it getting the Apexi V-AFC? Did you feel any difference after the installation. How much did it cost and where did you get it at? Also, did you get your car dynoed to have the settings right on the Apexi V-AFC? I am considering getting this but am not quite sure about the it.

Nice race! BTW, as I know 9/98-00 540 is quite a bit faster than 96-9/98 as it got better hp/torque curves (variable valve timing?). So, while 98-00 should do low of mid 5s 0-60, 97 could be more like high 5s - low 6s.

Red Hot - I'm not quite sure how much I got all together.

bdimc2001 - I know, I need some more W's...right now it doesn't look like I'm gonnna make it to the playoffs! Seriously, I do race quite a bit. Acutally, I kicked a lot of IS300 ass but didn't feel the need to post most of my wins. I normally like taking on bigger boys since I think it would be a better match. Good example, I took on my friend's 2001 Vette and my car when from white to black from all the smoke the Vette was leaving in front of me. Most of my races are merely experimental as I like to know what type of power gains I got and where I can improve (high or low end) my car.

yu888 - Headers and exhaust definately helped sooooooooo much. Well worth the $$$'s spent IMO!

speed - thanx!

3.2TL - I'm not sure how much it has helped cuz I was suppose to get my car dynoed and the freakin dyno machine was down the day I had an appointment. They wanted like $350 for 6 dyno runs with them adjusting my V-AFC for optimal performance. For this price, it's like another mod.

maxim5 - You liar! j/k I think I read that as well. Don't tell that to my friend!

my brother has a '95 540 sport with the 6 speed. That thing is badass. He got his without traction control or anything so it drives like a muscle car. I was driving it for a weekend and I was racing everyone I could. When I had it the tires were slightly bald so every time I would hit second hard it would spin for 30-40 feet and start to kick out. I raced my friend in his Boxster and except for 1st gear (too much wheelspin) I had him easy. At about 80-90 MPH i was able to put 2-3 car lengths by 130. sweet car. pretty damn sweet the TL could hang!!
