TL vs. ???

I didn't exactly buy my TL for racing, but how can you resist. I'm curious how our car matches up against the competition. What cars are our direct competitors? What cars will give us the best race?

How do we fair against maximas, audi (A4s A6s), grand prix (GTs GTPs), Caterras, Lincoln LSs, Eclipses..... what else??

What cars do we think will give a good race - but are just a waste of time (win or lose).

I think we should keep track this here.

Well, a good starting place would be too look at the stock HP, Torque & curb weight of those cars on www.kbb.com
We should get hammered by the A6 2.7T, probably fair against the A6 2.8. A4 1.8 T should be tough, especially since they make a chip to soup it up...
The chip brings up a good point of you don't know what some one did to their cars, but when their torque, & HP are bigger & their weight is smaller, they better have some tall ugly slow gears if you think your car is gonna touch it...

I dunno though, you can make an Integra get 300HP with the right mods...

Don't Ass U Me anything...

I've walked away from a Mustang GT starting at 50mph on the highway a couple times. I would get killed off the line, but the 'stang ain't much in roll-on.

I can't wait to see how mean your CL will be.... When I heard that American Honda had decided to put a 6speed manual in the CL this fall I knew that would be a monster. That will dramatically improve the CL's 0-60 times as well as all other times.

You can't count on the stories here being "real world" exprience, we don't know that the cars we go against were really running...for example, a Type S w/Headers, catback, CAI, and what ever else you want to put on it, is not really going to pull away from a Mustang GT either off the line or doing 50...that GT described above was not really gunning, I promise you.

You are right in your statement that I don't really know what he had under the hood. Considering he was tryiing to cut me off entering the freeway, and I about ran the punk into a wall, I know he was on it.

A good friend of mine has a Cobra w/ roughly a 4.7 rear and intake work. Off the line, I might as well have a razor scooter. However, his gearing kills him above about 60. On a roll-on, he doesn't fair too well.

BTW, a Maxima w/ Automatic is not a real threat. The 5spd is another story. I've tested both head to head. I usually lose by about 1/2 a car to the Maxima 5spd (stock), and beat the auto by about a car (stock) in my TL (ram air)

Hey I'm glad you didn't take my post the wrong way, I didn't mean it as rude, I'm just saying if both were gunning, it wouldn't be a walk away, it would be close and at both running 260 HP stock...I really don't know where I"d put my money on it!

Having driven an A4 1.8tq and an A6 2.8 I can safely say that a TL will kill either of these... a TL-S would be a slaughter. However, as you stated, you have to keep in mind that turbo Audis can realize pretty impressive gains with an ECU upgrade... so stay away from any menacing looking A4's and especially S4's and A6 2.7t's.

Doug,

well - i'm not going to set up a race i know i can't win. and if i you pulled up next to me at a light - yea we'd probably race and with your set-up you'd win. That's cool - i'd know your car was jacked though. Like i said that's "real-life".

Dude - you're taking this way too seriously. Like i said - i didn't buy my car for racing, YOU DID. And if you're going to make this personal then you should take the $40 you're saving on me and start investing for a nicer car.

buddy.. calm down.. don't bunch your panties.. its not personal.. like i said before i am not going to waste $40 fill up of NOS on you.. meaning i will race you straight up.. you would think i killed your child or something.. i wouldn't waste my $40 on a maxima ither.. or a CL-S or a BMW 540 or a GS400 .. don't feel special.. its just a statement

Sadley yes Thanks for welcoming us. You're the first LOL. We usually get looked down on on this site. Nice site, very nice indeed.

I've raced 2 TL's and won. Must be the 99 versions with the 4speed auto's? I do have mods, but I raced them before it.

Shifting manually proves to be a great benifit to the 2000+ maxima owners since leaving it in full auto kills our power by shifting 500rpm's below redline where our peak HP occurs.

Before Mods-15.9@86.7mph
Before Mods- 15.6@89.9mph Manual shifting

What are the times you guys get with your stock TL's?

raced a ford contour svt... that thing surprised me... i was behind him until we hit the highway our high-end is bad but this thing looked like it was almost stopped

raced a maxima and we were dead even the whole way to 80

for those in the Francis Lewis Blvd vicinity, have you ever seen a blue modded (possibly the Viggen edition?) saab 9-3 hatchback? how would our cars hold up against one of those?

Talking

Personally I would love to see this. I do invite a race if anyone so wishes. I know you will not walk on me like you are supposed to have walked on the other SVT you raced.

Don't take this the wrong way cause I am just trash talking and nothing more. A friend of mine has a 3.2 TL (he is just starting to mod it) haven't raced yet but know that I would win :p

Ladies & Gent's please welcome my roommate to the board with his above post (KJSOL).
I'll admitt, his Car is more fun to drive being stick, but tough to tell the speed diff...guess I'll have to race with him to find out, but he did admitt he thinks I'll take him off the line, not at the top end as the first post about an SVT above bragged...we'll see!

I raced a friends svt(stick, i dunno that they come in auto) with my 00TL and he took me off the start by about a car, but we only got to run to about 60, cuz then cops pulled from around the corner. But it didn't look like i was about to catch him.

ok guys... I'm not bragging... I'm merely stating the fact that I whooped his ass i admit he had me on the low end!!!

heres what happened... we were both driving on a service road and i wanted to see what he had so I instigated... he downshifted and took off and by the time i knew it was a race he was like 2 car lengths ahead so i put in SS and downshifted to 2nd. by this time we had just gotten onto the highway. he was about 2 car lengths ahead until i shifted into 3rd and when the vtec kicked in i caught up to him and passed him which was around 80mph. by the time i shifted to 4th i was like 2-3 car lengths ahead... so maybe i exaggerated a tad :p

Zodiak... you guys only hit 60 which was why it didnt look like you were catching up

kjsol and mgothers... when you two race take it on a nice straight highway

When/where was this "race"? It wouldn't have been in Maryland on I-95 north, just after the Capital Beltway on Sunday evening, was it? Was it a silver SVT tour with MD plates? I was pretty sure the TL in question had NY plates. Probably too much of a coincidence though.

Just curious because that was my SVT and I didn't go for sh1t because the traffic was too heavy for streetracing IMO.

BTW, obviously I'm another Contour SVT guy, nice looking board y'all have here. Looks like a level-headed crowd similar to what we have at Contour.org. Nice to meet y'all, just curious if this was the guy I was playing with. He had some nice moves...
