Thumbs up tl-s vs lexus ls430

Found this interesting tidbit out. Looking at car and drivers april issue of new car tests the tls is quieter at 70 mph than the king of luxury cars. tls 62 dbs at 70 mph vs 64dbs at 70 mph for the ls430. May not sound like much but impressive for a 20000 difference in price of the two cars. I know the tls is not vault like but nonetheless very good for a car in this class. By the way drove a g35 last sat with 2200 miles on it and it had various rattles from the console and a thump over the bumps.

That's an amazing statistic! And the price difference between a TL and an LS is more than $20K...

Sit in the two and you will be like screw motortend or whoever. If you have not sat in the two let alone DRIVEN the two, you would know that at speed, there is NO compariosn. Stop magazine comparing.

Between TL-S's beating GS 400's at 100mph and TL-S's quieter than LS 430s why would anyone buy anthing else. I''ll be back, gotta go puke.:yack:

There's really no need for you to come back. I hate it when people make fun of other people if they post something about being able to beat a faster car. Since it sounds like you (sicklex) were actually present during that particular race, please elaborate. Tell us every little bit. What else happened? What kind of mods did both the cars have? And by the way, what color were they? Are you suggesting that since the magazines declare the GS430 a faster car than the TL-S, there's no point in such a race because the TL-S loses by default? Now look who's magazine comparing.

Considering my best bud had a CL-S, my best buds sis has a TL, I have driven both, went to the dealer and driven both, raced and beat both, I know what I am talking about.

My bud and I race, switch cars and race each others cars, and we have done extensive testing on each cars capabilities. We both know for a fact, that at speed, the type-s engine loses speed cause of gearing. Plus the 4.0 is no slouch. That is why I am calling a bluff.

Oh now I see. I guess since you already tested it out, from now on we should ask you for the expert opinion in every race. You'll be sort of like the go to guy who "approves" a kill story. Go ahead and reread what you wrote above. It's actually pretty funny.

Also, it's pretty convenient that (INCIDENTALLY) you have access to a wide array of cars. I've seen the likes of you before. You know what I think? Not only are those friends of yours imaginary, but you probably don't even have your own car.

That can't be possible...not with all of that road noise intruding into the cabin of the TL-S with those low profile tires! Have you ever ridden in the Lexus? That car seals shut with a thunk and you could hear a pin drop! The Editors must have made an error in printing the mag.

Thanks spoonpower for backing me up, seems some people when you make a factual statement have a habit of trying to put you down because they think its unbelieveable, I do lots of car research and dont make a statement until I know for sure. I never tried to put the tl above an ls430 because thats not possible just thought it was impressive to be ranked up there in quietness.

yeah, they also have a ford for a car of the year, crown the BMWs whenever they can, and consider bose audio systems among the best. magazines are shiat. they have nice pics and that's it. you come to forums like this one and learn firsthand what's good and what's not.

Absolutely...and if you don't believe what you read here, just go and drive whatever it is that's being talked about and find out for yourself.

Actually, some people do buy cars for the "quiet factor"--it's one of the elements contributing to the overall feel of the vehicle. 2 dB might not sound like much (no pun intended), but it is noticeable. You're right that most people drive with the radio on, but the reason Mark Levinson decided to team with Lexus was exactly because their whisper-silent cabins were up to the task of containing audiophile-quality sound.

Okay, I am not doubting he had access to those cars but you all know what I mean. Few people in their right mind would let another person borrow their car to "TEST" it, if you know what I mean. If he and you can post an opinion, so can I. You should do as you preach and stop hating.

I do care about quietness in car when it goes over $30k.
2db could be quite a bit of difference. (it is exponential measure of noise after all)

It's not just about the volume but also resonant frequency and what frequencies are allowed in.

70 db at 20k hertz is much more annoying than 70 db at 40 hertz.

I own a TL-S and my old neighbor has a LS400 (not 430) that I've ridden in extensively. At low speeds the performance oriented exhaust of the TL-S is clearly louder than the LS400. At 65 MPH though I think the TL-S is quieter...

I think part of the reason is it is only turning at 1750 RPM at 60MPH. Compare that to the A6 2.7T at 2500 RPM or the BMW 330i and Mercedes C320 at 2400 RPM and you can see the TL-S is idling at freeway speeds. The tire thing kind of baffles me too though.

Before the Lexus guys flame me I think the LS is a very solid car and very quiet. It's fast too with similar 0-60 times to the TL-S despite being a heavier upmarket car.

Dude, either your friends all ride mass transit or they do not trust you if you have never driven their car. I've also posted pics of my car so why not search if you want to know so bad.

Someone made made a great point, 17" tires are louder than 16" tires PERIOD.
Someone also made a good point about the RPM being lower.

I think Lexus (Toyota) makes some very efficient trannies, considering the 4.3 "only" makes 290-300 hp, the power is effectively being transmitted to the wheels. Strong as hell too, cars take a beating and keep on ticking.

Hmmm, I just remembered, I posted pics here of his CL-S beating my other buds Legend GS 6-speed, do a search.

I do agree with ferrizo, once the radio is up, I can't hear sh!t in almost ANY car.

They trust me to let them drive their cars but I would never "test" their performance because the car isn't mine. And likewise, I would never let anyone "test" my car's performance either. You know, I hear you are a respected authority on numerous boards, which leaves me wondering how you have time to own and drive ANY car you claim to own.

Actually vandy, I've cut it down some (a lot actually). Planning meets and I got the 2-door something bug biting my behind.

I dunno, I guess we are different. We know if one breaks something, they will pay for it, so that is an ease on the mind. I feel most of my friends drive pretty well (even the ones in SUVs ). But it's not like we are at the track. Always a huge parking lot or an empty road.

There is nothing wrong with not owning a car and posting at car boards. There is a HUGE problem if someone does talk smack and don't own jack.

I am not here to make friends, but to add input on what I know and when necessary, what I think. It would be COUNTER-PRODUCTIVE if everyone agreed like a bunch of blind monkeys.
