Go to your dealer... they can order it for you...

At least I know that you can get that from my dealer...

Some dealers will want a VIN and refuse to order a part w/o it. Just find a TLS on their lot and swipe the VIN.

Ask Tim if he can get you one. He used to sell those.

now thats a stupid idea...dont you think the service guys will check out the VIN number first? once they find out it doesnt belong to any acura owner, theyre obviously going to know that the car doesnt "exist".

And why in the world do they need your VIN? I just bought the main print panel where the odometer resides and the dealer didnt ask me anything.
If the dealer is giving you too much hassel, just find a dealer that sells on the web, and order what you need, hassel free.

They require the VIN because Acura doesn't condone putting Type-S gauges in a non-Type-S model. The reason? The redlines are different (Type S is higher). From what I was told, Acura is concerned that an owner of a TL-P with swapped gauges may inadvertantly redline the car, thinking it is safe to do so when, in fact, they are damaging the engine. The real concern is once the car is sold from the original owner to a second owner. The original warranty transfers and the new owner may not be aware that the gauges were ever swapped (or realize the redline is different). Subsequently, a warranty repair as a result of an overrevved engine could become denied, even though the new owner didn't do anything wrong (thought he was driving the car within acceptable parameters, but he wasn't).

I've heard people say it's because Acura wants to keep the gauges exclusively for the Type S, or because they don't want people messing with the gauges (and the odometer). Truth is, they're in business to make money and if you want to spend the $$$ to buy the gauges, they'll gladly sell them to you. But they need to protect themselves from warranty claims from inadvertant engine damage, so they do the VIN checks.

BTW, I don't believe they actually check to see that *you* own the TL-S with the VIN you are giving. As long as you can provide *any* valid VIN from a TL-S, they should let you get it. Just say you're buying it as a gift for someone....

I guess it really depends... I know a part guy in a Toronto dealership... not really my friend but I know him... I asked him if I can get the guage, and he said as long as you pay for it, no problem... he said the VIN number is not an issue...

perhaps this is a difference between US & Canada?

anyhow go try different dealers in your area... if you help... let me know. I can also get them for you from Toronto dealers... provided that you pay the shipping, and I will give you all the invoice and stuff...

it's just a guage... no that you are swapping an engine... ya know...

The VIN explanation makes no sense. The rev limiter in the ECU doesn't figure out redline by sticking an eyeball out front and looking at the tach, it's programmed in. So there wouldn't be any warranty problems from doing this.

It's probably local dealer procedure, maybe their computer system wants it.

Damn dawg, you might be luck out here (or I might be luck out here) since we both want the OTHER one...how about a trade?
I picked up a 2002 TLS cluster (da whole thing) and was going to replace my whole cluster (2002 TL) cuz the odometer was broken (dropped it, long story). Anyways, I am not too fond of the silver color gauges..I want original black color....

What year model is yours?

P.S. I even have the Type S switches..the switch that says "VCS" instead of "TCS" like on the regular TL.

Are you talking about taking gauge cluster out? Tim has nice instruction for it.

Installing Type-S gauge

Where are you located? I'm in Houston. If you're in Houston, I can help you take it out. But actually, it's very simple. There are two screws right on top of the glass (speedometer), behind the steering wheel. Take those out, pull the fuse cover (behind the driver door) then use a screw driver and your hand to gently pull the black panel off. Take the plugs for the TCS/cruise/fog switches out and work your way toward the a/c panels. There is a green plug behind the clock, take that out too..then just put a small screw driver in to remove the four bolts/nuts holding the speedometer cluster...slide it out and unclip three plugs behind it and you're done.

Re: Re: TL-S gauges

I also would be interested in a swap/. I have an 01 TLP with black guages. If it doesn't work out with the other guy let me know.
