I think when a timing belt breaks, the car just stops moving. I assume that most people would not let it get that far and would replace the timing belt according to the manufacturer's recommendation in the Users Manual. I would have to consider myself extremely lucky when the timing belt in my 86' prelude broke and I literally coasted to my driveway and called AAA.

yo,
I have 98k on my '99. I have not replaced my belt yet although I am planning to call Acura and get the car scheduled for the work.
I believe that the recommended is for ~90k although some folks just feel better doing it earlier.
As far as knowing whether it is going out...no symptoms will precede a failure. Like previously posted, it will just break and the car will stop...simple as that.
Expect to drop some coinage on the job. Remember, it is best to also change out all of the belts, hoses, and h20 pump while they are replacing the TB. i am thinking the work should run in the 500-800 range with all the work that is necessary. That equates to about 1 1/2 - 2 car payments so while it is not cheap, replacing the car due to catastrophic failure is not a good option :-)

You will not know when it needs replacing. However you can find out when it's about to go. if you get regular checkups on the condition of your timing belt you will know about when it needs to be replaced. I know my 2k2 has a suggested maintainence of 105K miles.
I'd recommend getting it replaced before it conks out. I've heard more then a few stories of the timing belt giving out, and damage to cams/cylinder becuase of stuck open valves.
I know i get things in the mail from my Honda dealer about changing TB in v-6 accord. Of around the same age it's around $500, but who know's how different the Acura really is.

Replace your belt at 105k.. Thats what Honda recomends. Make sure you have a competent person do it. And change the water pump while they are there. You will probably spend about 7 or 8 bills on the job. Parts and labor. Make sure they use Honda parts. If I was you I would have the dealer do it. Seeing as a bunch of 2003 's were called in for tbellts and water pumps most of the guys know how to do em.

To correct my original post, I should have put the total cost of the repair in the neighborhood of $500. The labor cost would probably be something like $300. The $500 estimate would include the labor, the belt, and also the water pump, which is normally replaced as part of this repair since it is relatively cheap, there is no additional labor, and it would really suck to have to tear everything apart later if the water pump failed.
Of course, you can probably save some money by having an independent shop do the repair.
