sounds about right. the timing belt is expensive to change but if you dont, then your car will suffer in the long-run.

Replacing the timing belt is preventative maintenance. It may cost about $400 to replace, but f it breaks, the pistons and valves will be damaged.

Your talking an engine rebuild, which will cost you thousands!

belt is probably 50 (75 with shop markup), but labor is what kills ya

get the drive belts replaced at the same time and have them check the water pump and other stuff since they have to remove/expose that stuff when they replace the timing belt

i think the timing belt is a little more expensive than 50. i think the total job should cost around $800.

Check this out...

"...Both TL engines utilize a direct ignition system with knock control, which helps to optimize power and fuel efficiency by ensuring a properly timed spark at all engine speeds. Equipped with platinum-tipped spark plugs and a long-life timing belt, all TL’s are designed to run for 105,000 miles before requiring a major scheduled tune-up."

Life-long timing belt?!

I think I replied to a post on this topic awhile back.
I am also not sure what kind of car {dknh928} has but in general a timming belt replacement is exspensive. I have only had one replaced on a car of mine & that was a long time ago. This was my 1980 HONDA PRELUDE that I had for 15yrs. The car was like 8yrs old when this was done so that would have been 1988. The cost was around $500-$600 then at the dealership. They also replaced the water pump at that time. The reason for water pump replacement is the labor is the same as the belt. If they are going to replace the belt you have the pump replaced also.

I usually replace mine around 60,000 miles. It cost me around $400, but that was a 4 cylinder, I think the TL might cost a little more. Basically, the belt is cheap, but the labor per hour is very expensive. Usually a timing belt job will run around 3-4 hours. Another thing about the timing belt is the tension of the belt, a bad mechanic or a rookie will probably mess it up by having too much or too little tension. Too much tension will result in breaking of the timing belt which your valves may hit the pistons. A bent valve = $$$$$

$800...that belt beter be made of gold; they screwed you wherever you had that done

a life long timing belt sounds pretty strange. my 93 maxima has a timing chain, but even that wears out eventually.

sorry, my bad. but my point is $800 should cover more then just a rubber belt and 3-4 hours labor. Even with a dealer shop doing the work it shouldn't cost that much. Normal labor charges here in CA are 60-90, so at most you're looking at ~500 for a timing belt.

are you sure something else wasn't broken also, becsaue $800 just doesn't jive.

It sounds about right, dealer will go around $800 to over $1000. It ain't matter if it's only the belt. It requires all other belts and parts to be removed to ge to the timeing belt. I usually don't go to dealer for this, a good shop can do it fine. Have all belts, water pump, all belt tensioners, coolant replaced at the same time. the extra items cost you around $150-$200. Save a second trip and almost the same labor charge just for a bad water pump. 2cents.

Last timing belt I had done was on my '93 Vigor, around 2-3 years ago. I paid between $400-$500. This included timing belt, water pump, and all drive belts.

They normally replace the water pump as a precaution, but mine was slowly starting to leak, so the "timing" was perfect.

$800 seems a little steep.

Are you talking about dealer? Cuz I was referring to dealer charge for a previous post. My mechanic friend did the whole job for only $150 for my CRX, I got all the parts myself.

If you're referring to my $400-$500 amount, it was through a dealer.

For a good diagram of the timing belt assembly go to
www.inexpro.com/legend_temple/ click on technical scrolls then technical diagrams then timing belt assembly.

This engine is what is called an interference fit. That means that if the belt breaks the piston contact the valve assembly causing extensive internal damage otherwise known as expensive. The replacement of the timing belt is a wise invesment. 75-90,000 miles is the recommended interval. With good luck you can go further. A friend replace the belt at 110,000.

Gotta give my $.02 on this. BTW, this is my buddies accct, this site cookied me so it autologoned.(?) I would say that about 500-700 should be fair. Personally, I think you should get your front seal changed out too. should only take another hour st most, but if especially past 100k, if it starts leaking, you are gonna pay for the labor again and the seal costs $15. =o) Personally, I usually charge labor of 150 for SOHC and about 200 for DOHC(depending) on timing belts, but that is for changing all belts, front seal, timing, idler pulley, water pump, and usually just do a tune-up and oil change while in there. Of course the other person buys all the parts, usually total is about 400-500 depending on the parts. (I hate doing timing belts, so my labor is kinda steep)
