Unhappy Throw another tranny on the pile

'02 TLS with 12,500 miles and the whining noise got louder and louder. Thought it was tire noise (nah...not the michelins...) but the dealer told me I had a bad second gear bearing. Had the tranny (and ECU) replaced in April.

Just took it for an 1800 mile drive last weekend and the whining is back along with some slight slipping (hesitation like when the A/C kicks in on your dodge neon). I stumbled on your website tonight and got this quesy feeling...

I'll be calling the dealer in the AM. I'll post on the results. Oh, does anyone know why I got a new ECU with my (first) replacement tranny?

Great forum by the way. You guys know your stuff...

The ECU is changed out because the original programming was designed for maximum MPG and it resulted in premature upshifts. The car would shift into 5th gear at speeds as low as 35 mph which resulted in lugging the engine under moderate acceleration before the car downshifted. Also, in sportshift mode, there used to be a 1 sec. delay between the 2nd and 3rd gear shift. That has also been eliminated in the the ECU programming.

Thanks for the ECU lesson. I took my TLS back to the dealer for a tranny look see today and they diagnosed my whining noise to a bad left front wheel bearing. We'll see...
