Question Thinking of Purchasing '97 2.5TL

We are considering buying a '97 2.5TL from a local Acura dealer who has "certified" the car. It has 49K on it and we will buy an extended warranty but would like to know the pros and cons of this model. Your comments are most welcome.
Thanks!

I don't own one but did have a '97 Accord LX on which the TL is based. I can tell you that I wish I would have spent the extra cash for the TL, that's for sure!

The '97 2.5 TL is a fine, well-rounded car. I'm sure you will enjoy it. I was extremely pleased with my Accord, but did wish it had leather and a little more power. The TL addresses both issues there. There were a few fit and finish issues as my Accord was assembled in the USA, but the TL was assembled in Japan and has better quality.

For more information, have a look at the "First Generation" section of this website. Most of the discussion over there is about modification to the TL, but if you ask the same question you should get some responses.

For what it's worth, my current TL is my 3rd Honda and I have loved every one ('85 Prelude, '97 Accord and now the '01 TL).

If you are perhaps middle-aged, then you will find that Japanese cars are now the cream of the crop compared to 20 years ago.

Another fine car to consider is the Lexus ES300, which is consistently rated higher than the first generation TL. The Infiniti J30 is my favorite for a $15-20K used car, though, and it has quite a following. The I30 is a little bland, but a '96 J30 will really impress you. Go drive one after you drive the '97 2.5TL and you'll see.

Good luck, and welcome to the family in advance!

If you can, try to get the 97 3.2 TL instead of the 2.5 for a little bit more power.

i have both 96 3.2 tl and 2000 3.2 tl and i can tell you there is no comparison. the ist generation tl is sluggish with its transmission and the steering is way too light to have adequate feedback. it's a competent luxury car, but if you enjoy spirited driving, the 1st generation tl is just not up to the task.
on the plus side, the first generation tl has much better assembly quality than the american made tl.

Thank you everyone for all of the great input. Does any one know about the power of the 2.5 vs 3.2 liter? Also any major issues to be aware of? For example we are trading our 94 Volvo 850 Turbo that has its share of electrical problems.
Thanks

I have the 97 2.5TL premium and I love it. The reliability of Acura, the smooth ride
luxary with power. I definityly recommend it especially if you get the premium.
