Thinking about getting a used 02-03 TLS

Hey All..

I used to be a part of Acura-TL.com, back before the beautiful redesign, but I left, reason? I don't know..

Anyways, I'm back, and I am browsing through the forums, and I might as well say hi. I was just reading up on the TL-S, and figured I should ask about a concern I had.

Do all the tranmissions go in the TL-S? Or have some people had good luck with them? This is a primary concern for me, since I do not want to buy the car and have to shell out money for a new tranny. Also, how reliable are these cars? (My family have had a Honda and it was very reliable) Other than that, I don't have any more concerns...

Thank you very much

Geoff

my tranny hasnt gone out yet at 40,000k miles but everybody on the forums tell it it will sooner or later. Acura will fix the tranny for free if you buy a car still under warranty which most should still be if you're looking for a 02-03. As for me, ive heard the sports shift in honda cars might be the main problem with trannys going out. I've had two friends with honda preludes where their trannys blew cause they used the sport shifts all the time.

I'll vouge for the prelude SS tranny problem.
But the tranny in my 03-S feels very strong, just dont abuse it and 'll be fine

the failure rate on the TL tranny is a reported ~2%. it's not really that significant. it sure as hell beats the 200+ recalls the Ford Focus has...

If you think that by not purchasing a TL b/c of the tranny issue, you're in for a big surprise. Most cars (eg. Nissan, Lexus, etc.) have tranny issues as well..and like el.cheapo stated, it's close to about 2% that actually do fail for Acuras.

Get an '03 with a build date of 1/03 or later. From what I have read, these seem to have less of a tranny problem.
