Think my tranny is going, is it??

99TL with 65k, tranny hesitated when going into first gear and does not switch very smoothly. In first gear it lags and then takes off with a jerking motion. I am dropping it off at Park Ave Acura to have it looked at. I want to fix it before I end up stranded on the side of the road with a car that does not move. How will they determine if they will fix it?? thanks

2 friend of mine asked me about it after driving it. I really noticed it after driving an 03 330ci sport for the weekend. A huge difference when getting back in my TL...

I actually just brought my parents 99 TL in for a new trans. Sounds like you're going to be getting your trans replaced. I brought the car to Wayne Acura. It took 10 days to get the car back, they had to ship the trans from California. Good thing they extended the warranty on it. The car only had 32K on it. It shifts so much better now, and if your using the sport shift, the downshift is smooth. Before being fixed it used to jerk you forward when you downshifted and even upshifting. The only bad thing was acura paid for the rental through enterprise and I ended up checking some extra insurance for the rental which she made it sound like it was $17, when it was actually $17 a day, I was quite pissed about that. Good luck

Not trying to pay $17 a day for a piece of garbage car from enterprise. Yes the car is very rough when it is in ss mode. Also when the car is a little cold in the morning it jerks into and out of gears. The only think is that sometimes the car drives OK. I hope it does not drive well when i bring it to the dealer..

Actually when I brought the car to the dealer it was driving pretty much okay that day. I guess they knew what they needed to look for because the trans got replaced. As for the $17/day from Enterprise, I had a brand new GM plastic Trail Blazer which I beat the snot out of (not a big fan of GM products).

Sounds pretty good. I had switch cars with 2 friends of mine, one for a Jaguar s type, the other a new 330ci. Both had said the car does not drive very well and the trany feels like it lags and jerks. Also it does not switch at very low RPM's when driving normal. They thought maybe they were just used to driving there cars but I do not think so now. I was getting used to the tranny and thought it was almost normal! I am dropping it off today, so I will probably know tomorrow!!

Took 10 days total to get the car back. First the have to "determine if you need a new trans" which you probably do. In this time they give you a loaner from the dealership, RSX, fun car to beat the hell out of for 2 days. They they call you back and say you need a new trans but you have to bring the RSX back so we can get you into a rental b/c it's going to be at least a week until we get the trans in from California. 10 days later I get the car back. Wayne was great about it, I think most Acura dealers are. Only thing was when they disconnected the battery I needed to input the radio code which I didn't have. They called Honda of America and couldn't get it, so I then had to call Springfield Acura where the car was originally purchased and get the code. Be prepared to be driving a rental for a few day.

ok thanks for the info. Last time I had a little rsx, I do not think I took that thing out of SS. Slow as hell without beating on it. I am already getting an enterprise car they said. All the others are out, that sucs. O well. If they say it needs a new tranny. I will set an appointment for after the new year and have them order the tranny, this way it may only take a few days. Do you think they will do that?

I have no idea what they may do. They may want to keep the car so that way there is no more damage to the existing trans, that way it's less for them to rebuild and stick back in another TL. Don't think you're getting a brand new trans. The TL we had is a 99 and they have the 4 speed instead of the 5 speed. I asked them if they were going to install a 5 speed instead considering they only made the 4 for one year. They laughed at me. Good luck.

I have a piece of garbage chevy malibu, I have to get out of the car to adjust the passenger side view mirror. and roll down the windows to spit. It suks, hope to get my car back today and give it after the new year to have it fixed....

You're getting a "new" rebuilt trans. Probably the one that came out of the TL I brought in haha. Did they say how long it would take before you get the car back? Kind of sucks that you have to beat around in a Malibu. Actually if it's really bad you can bring it back to Enterprise and get another one. They put me in a Grand Prix 4 door which I felt like I was 80 years old, went to Enterprise and asked them if I could change cars. They ended up giving me a TrailBlazer, better than the grand prix. I'm waiting to see when the trans goes again. I know a few people that went through 4-5 trans. Most of them were on the TLS though.

4-5 trannies? That's insane. Do they shift all the time, or drive normally?

Mostly shift. I'm sorry, not all were TL's, some were in CL's too, not that there is any differnce. Either way that shouldn't happen, sport shift or auto. The car should be built to be driven in sport mode all the time if wanted. I have a 99 integra LS 5spd, and beat the hell out of it. A 30K car should be able to take the beating of a 20K car, especially when made by the same company.

Hey, it's good on gas. Good to hear you don't have to wait too long to get it fixed.

Using SS actually helps prolong transmission life because there's less shifting of gears. Also, driving in D4 in city and D5 in highway helps for the same reason.
