Temperature Gauge

Hello,

I own a 99' TL 3.2, 231,000+ on the odometer.

Today (2-18-2016) the temperature gauge started to show the car was running warmer than usual. I noticed the gauge fluctuates, never fully overheating or staying in the middle.

Any suggestions what this could be? I use the car everyday and am careful to maintain it.

When was the timing belt service last done? Might be a faulty thermostat or air in the line. Any idle issues?

Purge the A/F before changing everything..

1.- Car must be cold
2.- Pop the Hood
3.- Remove radiator cap
4.- Turn on the car and set the A/C at Full Heat.
5.- Let the car idle until the fans kick in.

Once the fans start you can close the radiator and you successfully purged air out of the system.

If that doesn't fix your problem then replace the A/F Temp Sensor it can go bad (Been there, done that).

If you smell coolant but no coolant is leaking then the rad cap is probably defective, replace it.

If the car still runs hot after replacing the rad cap then your thermostat is probably defective. I would replace that too.

Also check that you aren't low on coolant. Mine was running warm & turned out to just need some coolant added. Had a small/slow leak somewhere.

If you have an OBD II scan tool you can check the Live Data: "ECT" Engine Coolant Temperature
to see if the gauge temp reading is true.
99 uses the older setup 1 sensor for the ECU and another for the Dash.

Mines runs at around 195 F then about 205 F both fans go on.
