Question Temp reading

I know this has been discussed before. But I noticed in the past threads, peoples temp reading has been HIGHER, but mine is WAAAAAAAY Below for some reason. Like today. In So Cali...Los Angeles Area is around 70 degrees...and my temp gauge was reading 54 degrees and it stayed like that, didn't even move the WHOLE DAY....then moved to 55, and that's it. I tried using the select and reset thing. I put +3, it only brought it up to 58. I think it's still off.

The adjustment you can make with the select/reset buttons is only +/- 3 degrees. If it is that far out of whack you need to get the sensor calibrated. You can do it yourself but it is a pain in the a$$ because you need to remove the whole front bumper to expose the sensor. The procedure involves submerging the probe in a bowl of ice cubes. When the ice cubes start to melt, you know the water is right at the 32/33 degree mark and the probe temperature is then set. Also, remember that when the car is running it won't give an accurate reading until you are above 35 mph (to avoid engine heat artifically raising the temp).

Since your TL is so new, just bring it back to the dealer and let them deal with it. I wouldn't go back just for that, though. Give it a couple days/weeks and see if there are any other problems (squeaks) that need to be fixed. Then have them all fixed at once.

BTW, congrats on finally getting it Ray.

wow -- my TL's is actually really accurate...

My TBirds outside temp reading sucked. it worked in winter, but summer and fallt and spring when it would get real warm during the day, then cool off at night, the next day it'd be stuck on the cool temp for a lonnnngggg time... it'd be like 90 out and it would say 54

Yeah, I'm going back to dealer next week to replace my left side skirt. Got damaged when they shipped the underbody to the dealer. So we'll see then. Thanks pianoman! haha! long wait is over.

bloo, i don't think it says it in there. I skimmed thru my manual.

I was reading your post and didn't realized the temp guage can be adjusted!!! I have a 2002 TL and seems like the temp guage reads 3 degrees C too high... (celcius here in Canada) I read the user manual and there is no mention of how to adjust the guage as you talk about... Is there a hidden procedure to do this?

Thanks for the help.

The adjustments are up where pianoman said it. hold the select & reset button a the same time for 10 Seconds..and it will go thru the number cycle..and you let go on the desired #. read pianoman's post up there

Smile Outside Temperature gauge

The manual says nothing about the procedure for adjusting the gauge. Better than that, 2 service advisors at 2 different dealers knew nothing about it either. Goes to show you the geniuses that work as service advisors. I went in both times to complain about the windshield wipers, which they changed both times and I wasn't satisfied until the second dealer drained out and replaced the windshield wiper fluid which a bulletin informed them was causing the problem. Hold down both buttons A & B for 10 seconds while startring the engine again and again until you make it correct by adjusting it to the temperature announced on the radio. You can only adjust + or - 3 degrees at a time. Release when you see the 3. Do it again until you set it properly. NO CHARGE FOR THE ADVICE. GOOD LUCK.

Same in the aviation business... we dont always tell the pilots about some hidden features of some nav or radar systems installed on the aircraft. We want them to fly the jets instead of trying to mess around with them.

I just went out there and calibrated the temp guage (-3C in Ottawa now).

Thanks for the help.

Note, there is not a need to include your signature more than once in a thread. Including it at the beginning of the thread is good nuff, Have some decency for dial up users

I've never needed to adjust mine. I've found it impeccably accurate as long as the car is in motion.
