Taking out stock headunit, Help!

My brother and I are going to install a thing in his car that plugs into the back of his stock radio so he can hook up his Ipod. He found a site with pictures and steps, but is it really necesary to take off the wood trim on the center console, then the rear piece of the console, lift the whole shifter assembly and take out the seat heater buttons all to pull out the head unit?!

You're right you don't have to take it out...
you can try to slide your hand behind the passenger kick panel... try to feel around for the empty slot in the back of the radio and plug it in that way...

It works for some people.
