Theoretically, it should be fine. But, your seals/gaskets might possibly start leaking. The only way to truly find out is to run synthetic.

i just switched from penzoil high milage conventional oil to penzoil ultra which is ultra class synthetic ie full synthetic manufacturers are getting rid of conventional oil, full synthetic has cleaning agents that most conventional oils dont have. When i switch my car 1/4 was completely altered in my opinion it just rides mor smooth and i was told all this from my mechanic

your mechanic is full of it
The only time going to full synth is a leak issue is IF you already have leaks!!!
The engine doesnt care what you run as long as you keep it changed on a reasonable basis

wrangler- when I said get your post count up to open PM's,, I did not mean to duplucate every thread already on gen2 main title list~
your trans...oil..more trans..why would you get a fluid change when dealer may just comp you a trans with that jet kit?
have you gone to the dealer and asked about getting it done?

MODS: please accept no further threads from wrangler till they follow up on first trans thread!!

I would not switch at that mileage. yes, yes, we all know that its not the synthetic oil that causes the leaks, but rather the bad seals. But what difference does it make? If his seals are bad but holding up together on bits of dirt and crap, then when he puts synthetic it can clear the dirt faster (its more detergent and has better cleaning agents) and the seals will start leaking and he will need new seals (expensive job on a car that is not worth much).
However, he might just luck out for another year and his bad seals won't leak, by that time he might sell the car.

So if you are a type of person who is looking for adventure, then go ahead, switch to synthetic at 160K miles and see how it goes.

I am myself on synthetic since first oil change, I am all for synthetics, but sometimes you have to think about how much your car costs and if you want to accept paying for repair now rather than later.
