Suspension Knuckles+bearings+free out of warranty transmission.

SO I have my car in at Piazza Acura of West Chester for a transmission replacement due to slippage (surprising huh?) the car is three months over the time limit of 7years but only has 66k miles on the clock. They are covering everything 100% including the labor! That was more than I expected, I thought I'd at least have to pay labor.

Here's the bad news: The left and right suspension knuckles and bearings are worn out and have excessive play (thank you shitty Philly streets) and they quoted me $1080 for the whole job including a 10% discount...
$89.00 x 2 for the bearings
$260.00 x2 for the knuckles
and 5 hrs total labor.

I have been hearing a clunking noise from the front end for a awhile I just thought my shocks were on there way out though...

SO any of you experts on here (ahem 01tl04tl or fatty sims??) know if this seems right? Is this what I could expect to pay for this job. I don't know much about suspension components, but I do know these are pretty major..

Thanks for any help it is greatly appreciated!

Also don't they have to lift the engine out of the car to do the transmission job? If that's the case maybe it's a good time to do the timing belt service...

No they dont touch the engine on a trans job.

DONT pay for new knuckles. Have them replace just the ball joint (or take it else where for that)

Thanks, I talked to the dealership andt hey said it may just be the ball joints. I think I may hold off and get second opinion. Also I see nothing about these "bearings" in any parts diagram. Unless they mean wheel bearings...

yes wheel bearings. Does your car make any humming or vibration type of noise while driving?

I tell ya- service writers are not often retired techs, sometimes not even car people- they are just salesmen selling auto repairs--its needs wheel bearings hahahahahaha
or something like that- about a grand hahahahahaha

its most likely ball joints- if it needs lower - do the uppers too
Have an alignment shop do that job and they can do an alignment as part of it.
Fresh trans and a car that steers straight!

DO replace the front motor mount if they say its bad/leaking- you wont have even known, part $120 and labor WITH trans removed is 20 minutes, not 2-3 hours they get to charge otherwise

The trans comes out the bottem- it gets unbolted from the engine,
the only extra thing there is to have the rear main engine oil seal replaced.. 30 minutes and $10 part

the latest on the court ordered `extended trans warranty` is 7 years PLUS 9 months from date of sale, or 109k miles whichever occurs first
and some VINS get `odometer error case` clause of 5% high reading, so its-114.5 on the odo for their limit
google it

mcfly-
I am guessing your car is lowered? that does put extra stress on parts of the steering and the cv joints/axle bearings, and tends to wear them out faster

Thanks guys! I actually went back over to the dealer and the tech showed me the worn out ball joints, they had a lot of play. The knuckle was fine and I got the service writer to take that and the wheel bearings off the total. I didn't ask about the upper ball joints, since I didn't see this post until I got home. Motor mounts were all checked and they were fine as well. So far it is only $506.00 total for parts+labor.

01tl4tl:
My car actually isn't lowered yet, I have tokico hp's sitting in my storage closet and will be getting springs soon. I'm really glad that I joined this site, otherwise I would've been clueless about all this and probably gotten robbed on service. Funny thing is they recommended a throttle body cleaning too and I told them that I just recently seafoamed my intake manifold.

So in summation I am really pleased that I am getting a new trans for free and that I was able to fend off the service writer, by simply calling and asking to see the car on the lift and go over what's actually wrong with a tech instead of just going off what the writer wanted to sell me. Thanks for your help guys!
