Super strong magnet under oil pan.

I am thinking puting on a super strong mangnet under the oil pan to trap any tiny metal debris circulating in the engine. I know where you can get a very very very strong magentic. If you have a computer hard drive that is no use anymore crack it open and you will find it in there. You can't believe how strong these magnetic is.

I am going to stick in under the oil pan. Do you think it will have any interference with the engine? I have see Toyota Camry had four tiny magnets inside the oil pan to attract tiny metal particle.

Have anybody in here done this before?

Gimmick. Just stick w/regular oil changes and you'll be fine.

Hard drive magnets are really strong, but have you ever had a microwave apart before? there are bigger stronger magnets in microwaves. but i've never heard of putting magnets on your oil pan. hmm.

My Dad is the Site Manager at a Hospital in NJ. His group services these puppies, MRI units.

I'm thinking about strapping the magnet from this thing to my car. Thta should keep the metal particles out of the engine, huh?

I'm thinking about doing this too. I figure it won't hurt, and even if it doesn't work that well, no harm is done.

i've heard of this theory before...it's not even worth your time. how much cr@p with iron do you think you'd really get if you change your oil every 3-5k miles? if you got any appreciable amount within that time I would be more worried about something being up with your motor.

I suppose it can't hurt to try it...i would find it humorous though if you went in for an oil change and found that the magnet was gone, probably scraped off by a speed bump.

They are wicked strong because they are rare earth magnets.

I would rather stick it on the bottom of the tranny pan (we have no filter).

Why not just magetize the oil pan? Run it thru the electromagnetic coils. This way all metal particles are guarenteed to stick

My dad works with NMRs, I was thinking of throwing one of those in there. That way I can do a service to the city and pic up any metal on the streets.

Neodydium or however its are spelled. It is a rare earth magnet that is extremely strong. Small amounts are used in serious audio applications. A 3x3x3 cube of this stuff can lift 3 tons of metal. Two pieces of this magnet come together with a force equivilent to 145,000 PSI that almost as much psi as a bullet! My dad did a quote for a company that is making the motors for "Ginger" or "IT" or the Segway whatever. They use these magnets in their motors. Several employees of the company have lost fingers handeling this stuff. One guy tired to take a couple of pieces home only to have them rip though his jeans and snap together as soon as he took a step. He severly injured whats inbetween :wow:

I forgot to mention, how are you going to get it out to clean it, it is super strong and hard to get off. If it is on the outside is will just collect it all together and everytime you hit a bump some of it will fly back into the oil.

ROFL! If you put that thing too close to the engine, it'll MAKE metal particles from the engine!

I think a good quality oil filter is less the trouble of using magnet, plus all the metal particles will be accumulated inside your pan. Don't tell me you are planning to lower and clean it every year.

the principle is sound. the tranny drain plug has a tiny magnet in the tip. but tranny fluid is not changed all that frequently.

yeah, magnet in the engine oil pan couldn't hurt, but I don't think you'll get enough gains to warrant the trouble.

You can't magnetize aluminum...

OK guys,

I know it would not hurt to slap on the oil pan. As someone mentioned in here all the metal particles will be accumulating inside the oil pan and it not easy to clean it unless you have to remove the oil pan.

Maybe put a magnets on the oil filter? Whoever mentioned put the magnets near where the transmission fluid plug nut is a good idea.
