The clutch plates, drum and a shaft were updated to allow better cooling and less friction. I dont know if there is a way of knowing, other than the ones done after Feb of 05 (i believe) are the ones with updated parts

I don't know much about mechanics but removing torque for a brief moment while the gears shift sounds like an interesting idea. It seems this will reduce load on the clutch and on the gear teeth (?) while they are locking into place. Of course acura says they do to for better shift comfort.
