I've read somewhere that the newer honda models, with fly by wire, have a more reliable transmission because engine power is reduced during shifting which puts much lower wear on the parts, but the transmission itself is basically the same.

Do you know exactly what was updated? How do I know if I'm getting the updated tranny (mine is being replaced right now)?.

i dont buy into the drive by wire making them last. It was a bad design with inadiquit parts.
The clutch plates, drum and a shaft were updated to allow better cooling and less friction. I dont know if there is a way of knowing, other than the ones done after Feb of 05 (i believe) are the ones with updated parts

Yeah, just put mine in the shop today for a new tranny, I'd like to know my odds of scoring the updated one as well.

Ask the dealer to see if they can get info on the rebuild date

I got my replacement in July 2005, and it's been 8000 miles since the new transmission was installed. So far no problems, btw my Tranny died at 52000 miles.

I don't know much about mechanics but removing torque for a brief moment while the gears shift sounds like an interesting idea. It seems this will reduce load on the clutch and on the gear teeth (?) while they are locking into place. Of course acura says they do to for better shift comfort. Here is the source, this is for accord but probably applies to newer TLs:

"5-Speed Automatic Transmission for V6 Engines
...One difference from the TL transmission is the addition of the ETC system to further enhance shift smoothness by momentarily closing the throttle (reducing torque) at shift points."

See i dont think the power has any thing to do with it in our cars. All the other clutch packs dont have the issue with the power and shifting. Just 3rd, and its due to a bad design in coolant flow
