Also, the stock 6-Disc changer used in the 2002-2003 TL does play burned CDs.

That's the main reason I replaced the original single disc player from my 1999 TL with one of the 2002-2003 units. Those are plug-n-play replacements.

Not all of the single disc players will play burned CDs. Some will and some won't.

Some will work with particular brands or batches of CDs, some won't.

Well I stick to imation and I give away many cds to all my friends (all in all I have burned over 400 cds, I'm a music freak) and I have never had anybody come back to me saying that the disc would not play in their stock or aftermarket setup. And the 6-disk changer (03 Type-S mmmm black) plays all of my burned cds.

Like Chris said before "POS" and I agree with him, either get a aftermarket screen/headunit or 02-03.

I understand.

I'm not suggesting that all of the second generation CD players have trouble playing burned CDs. Just that the single disc players that came with the 1999-2002 TLs have a very spotty record with burned CDs. There were apparently unit to unit variations where some would work and others wouldn't. People tried many different brands of blank CDs and many different burning strategies. What worked for one TL owner would not work for another.

There have been many threads discussing this issue over the years. This was a really hot topic back when the 1999-2001 TLs were new. Many TL owners exchanged their single disc player under warranty in order to get another one that would play burned CDs.

The factory single disc player in my 1999 TL wouldn't play burned CDs so I replaced that with one of the 6-disc players from the 2002-2003 TL. That player does a great job with burned CDs, including the ones that wouldn't play in my original single disc radio.

Also be aware that the 6 disc changers, although they will play burned CDs, sometimes gets the burned CDs stuck. I think it was concluded that the CDRs are slightly thicker than pressed CDs.

If you're gonna swap, the aftermarket might be a better route to go unless you wan the OEM look.

That's very interesting. My impression was that burned CDs were prone to jamming because of the added thickness of an adhesive label. Are blank CDs without labels thicker than retail CDs? That possibility never ocurred to me.

And yes, I saw the 2002-2003 radio as a nice option since I did want to maintain a factory look.
