still getting shitty gas mileage

i changed the oil to synthetic, changed air filter, put air in the tires, and added gas treatment and fuel system cleaners, and i use 91

i still get like 16mpg in the city....im starting to get pissed, i used to get like 28 on the freeway and on my last freeway trip i got like 22....usually i get 19-20 city

do you think the fact that i got my car lowered and didnt get an alignment has any effect on gas mileage? what else can i do? i barely get 200 to the tank when driving in the city, and i rarely take the car above 3000 rpm

1. Heat and humidity kills fuel mileage.

2. Check the FPR vacuum hose. Take off the engine cover and you will see a hose on the rear bank of the engine, running parallel to the engine (sideways). Somehow mine blew off a while back, and the PCM thought I was losing fuel pressure. So it was adding 27% more fuel than normal. As soon as it was reconnected and I cleared the logs by disconnecting the battery, my fuel mileage went back to normal.

thats pretty bad mileage, i get 200 for a half tank and i drive city/highway about 50/50.

do you have a heavy foot? how is your air filter? wheel balanced? proper PSI? and u should defnitely get an alignment. Do you leave the car running idle for long time? A/C use? Spark Plugs? it can be a lot of things...

i had that problem before, I had to get a new Fuel Controller and a PCM (comes as a damn kit)..also my fuel injectors were a little misaligned so I aligned them and made them a bit looser...so far soo g00d.

good luck man.

dont have a heavy foot at all...rarely take it above 3000 when i come off the line....most of the time ijust cruise

brand new air filter
just changed oil to synthetic
wheels balanced
tire pressure was done
never use AC
live in SF so its almost always cold out

elaborate on this hose thing? if the hose is discconnected i just reconnect it, then kill the battery to reset the computer?

Precisely. Once you take off the plastic engine cover, it will be obvious to find a loose hose. It's a remote possibility.

there may be a number of things. if you continue to have bad mileage you may want to make an appt at teh dealer to let them diagnose the system while its running. there may be a o2 sensor thats sending the wrong signal? there are a ton of sensor, and vacum related things that are possible. my car idles all day long and i get typically 170-220 per half tank (depending on how much hwy driving i do)

Maybe you're driving more in the city than on the freeways lately? I used to (and still get) 16-18 mpg and thats with about 80% city. Lots of stop and go traffic in SF streets. But I do get 29-30 mpg on freeway when I drive from SF to Riverside (near LA) so I know theres nothing wrong with my car (at least I dont think).

Check your spark plugs. In my SUV, I just changed the plugs after having NEVER changed them for 110k miles, and I instantly gained 20% of the gas mileage back. The gaps had worn down from 0.04" to 0.065".

No, it is not impossible. How can you make such a statement?

In a recent trip I took, it was 232 miles when the needle finally dropped to the little line below the bold half-tank mark. Of course, by this point, I was at my destination and the rest of the tank was city mileage. That tank yielded 403 miles.

i get 200-230 at half then 100-120 on second half. Most cars the first half tank shows higher mile.

Not impossible for the highway, but it is for the city.

Definitely, I got about 230 at half on a recent highway trip. Although I'm still jealous when I go on trips in my friend's Camry and it's still above half-tank at 293 miles (YES, I didn't believe it until I saw it for myself)

I can sacrifice some gas mileage if that meant avoiding driving a car with no personality whatsoever.

Camry = vanilla

TL = chocolate chip

I actually have nothing but respect for the Camry. It's a 1998 model, and that same year model Camry saved some loved ones back in 2003. They were in it, stopped to turn on a 4-lane highway, when a big Avalon hit them from behind without slowing down. It knocked the Camry into oncoming traffic where it was hit three more times by two cars and a cargo van - everyone inside walked away unharmed, and the car was destroyed, hit from every angle.

And while you're right, it seems a bit boring, it's a very good car. I prefer to go in it when forced to choose between my TL and his Camry. The Camry rides better, uses less gas, and is every bit as comfortable. The cars are years apart, mine is faster and better equipped, but I see the Camry as a loyal friend and not as a competitor.

Oh, I'm not questioning the safety of the car. I know it's a very safe and reliable car. But it's just too boring for me. I am willing to sacrifice gas mileage, safety and whatnot for a little more personality in my car... not that our TL is an unsafe car.

Oh the TL is definitely safe, I just had to stick up for the Camry. It's a great car, just a boring one. I own a TL and an Accord V6 coupe, so I'm loyal to Honda and don't want or own a Camry, I just have utmost respect for the Camry - and Toyota as a company.

Same here. Toyota is a great company and I have much respect for them. But like you, I am also somewhat of a loyalist to Honda/Acura; and the fact that our cars are a little more fun to drive.

I always tell him (my friend) that Toyotas are cars designed for passengers and Hondas are cars designed for drivers!

I always feel a sense of pride, though, when Toyota one-ups the American brands. Second largest automaker and closing the gap quickly.

ok, i just got 334 driving about 80% freeway on my last tank.....so maybe my low mileage is attributed to the fact that San Francisco has so much stop and go traffic that it just eats gas mileage. so i get like 16-18 city, and like 23-26 highWAY...its not that bad

living in the city really sucks.....bad mpg, bad parking, potholes everywhere, crackheads, stolen cars

argh

What the hect? 380 on a full tank? After reading this forum something is hella wrong with my TL. I've got an 02 TLs and my light comes on usually around 245-265. That's probably 60 hwy/40 streets. 380 on a tank would be amazing...

Maybe I should change my spark plugs like mentioned?

I guess that just goes to show that there are so many variables that factor in. I guess if we were that concerned about mileage we would have bought a hybrid or something instead of our TL's.
