Question Still don't get how SS works...

i still don't really understand how the sportshift works...how would u get from 1st gear to 2nd gear? do u shift up for the first gear, then push it back to neutral, then shift up again for 2nd gear? do u have to shift down to stop (say i were going 35mph, in 3rd gear, need i shift to 2nd, and then down to 1st gear or just go to neutral and brake?)?

well, this question is really important since 2 of my friends went in to try out a TL. the sale guys wouldn't teach my friends how to use SS unless they were almost 100% sure they were gonna buy the car... i'm gonna go test out the TL soon enough and i really wanna try out the SS before i make the eral serious decision to buy the car and by talking to a lot of the Acura dealers in the T.O. area, a lot of them are really refusing to let ppl test out the 2002 TL and type S unless they are gonna buy the car right after the test drive...pieces of Sh*ts!

In SS mode, 1st-2nd shifts automatically, HOWEVER, from 3rd-5th, gear will be hold 'til driver upshifts manually, OR rev has reached redline. The tranny downshifts to 1st automatically when comes to a stop at red light.

Tranny ALWAYS starts in 1st gear at stop. It won't go into N...

BTW, you don't need to shift into N then shift gears. If you ever watch World Rally or TOCA races, SS works in the same manner. Just tap up for upshifts and tap down for downshifts.... there is a Gear display next to P,R,N,D5,D4 indicator....

what a bastard of a dealer. mine was willing to let me try every piece of it before buying. I hate how some of the schmucky dealers look at your age and think that you're not in the 'target audience' .. heh, if only they came on this list and realized how many young people buy it. but sheez.. anyway, I digress.

the sportshift works like this: when you shift into D5, you pull the shifter LEFT into the + and - slot. from there, when you push up, gears go up and when you pull down, gears go down. inside the SS slot, only the + and - matters, nothing else thats painted on that plate matters at the moment. the sportshift automatically downshifts, so you'll never have to downshift manually unless you need that extra "oomph" when passing. and shifts from 1->2 and 2-->1 work automatically, that takes a little getting used to. otherwise, it will be almost like driving a regular stick shift.
hope that helps.

I went to the first Acura dealer in the NYC city, I think it is called Panaroma Acura, it is in Queens and the guy refused to let me test drive a TLS. He said if you are interested in the car, put down a deposit. I was like, f*ck that!! How can I buy a car without test driving it. Anyway, I went to Montclair Acura in New Jersey, I was able to test a black TLS in less than 5 minutes. The funny thing is that I didn't know that there was a SS until after I buy the car. The salesperson who I have done business before point it out to me. I was like... COOL!!! Still waiting for the break in period until I use the SS.

Yes thats all you do is push it forward + for upshift it will pop back to the center.
When you want to go up to another gear say 4th to 5th you just push it foward agian.
There is no need to take your foot off the gas at all.The computer will not let you do anything incorrect. To go down from higher gear do the same but pull it back - It will go to first by itself if you come to a stop.

You have the center of the SS, then a + and a -. You 'tap' the shifter to the + to upshift. It's spring loaded to return to the center of the SS. It doesn't stay in the +.

Use the sport shift now, especially for down shifts. The extra vacumm will help seat the rings better. Also you can use it to vary the engine speed while keeping a steady road speed. It's best to keep varying the engine speed while breaking in an engine.
