Stereo Questions (FSTTYMS1 and other gurus please read)
Hey everyone. A while ago I posted asking whether the 2nd gen TL head unit would work in my 1st gen TL ( https://acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=132005 ).
Well, I bought a 1997 harness that plugs into my car and a 2000 factory harness that plugs into the original 2000 stereo. The harnesses made the wiring turn out nice since I had no splicing to do. My brother also did a kickass custom job of cutting and trimming the stereo and the face to fit in my dash. It looks reallly clean. I'll post some pics very soon.
Now the problem I'm having is that I get no sound from the speakers. I matched and soldered the wires from each harness together. I'm assuming they should be fine. The only sound from the system I hear is the beeps from the front left speaker when entering in the security code to the stereo. But after that, no more sound from the radio tuner or cd.
So does anyone know what the problem is? Could it be the wiring? I am going to check it again for the 3rd time. Or could it be that I need to somehow bypass the 2nd gen equalizer (which I don't have)?
P.S. My setup is 2000 TL head unit, no stock equalizer box, and no stock rear sub w/amp. So basically just the 2nd gen head unit and my stock 1st gen speakers.
Thanks a lot guys. I really appreciate it! Its been a few months of driving with no stereo, I need some tunes bad.

check the wiring diagrams for the 1997 and 2000 and check that the wires are exactly the same....if it is perfectly fine then i cant think of it being anything else than the head unit.

If i remember right the Tl has a loop system. It goes out of the hu into the EQ then out of the EQ then back into the hu and then out to the speakers. also are you sure its a TL radio? the tl and CL look the same but arent. The CL inst amplified and the TL is.

Ya I'm pretty sure its a TL stereo. It was also stated as one when I bought it off ebay.
Heres a couple pics of my stereo for you guys to confirm:

So do I need the equalizer or can I bypass it by connecting some wires or something?

Because when I bought the car the cd player wouldnt work. I wanted a stock look and I heard that the 99+ would work in my car. And now that I have bought the stereo and done some custom fitting in the dash, i need to get it to work.

I'm not sure if your '97 system is a Bose but I know for a fact that Bose only works with Bose because of the frequency the system uses. Bose uses a lower frequency then your normal and aftermarket systems to get a cleaner sound. When componets are mixed it results in the system to not sound right or not work at all.
If the wiring is correct and it is a Bose system it could be just your speakers and head unit frequency's don't match. Or somthing internal like the D.A.C on the H.U went bad.

I'm sure it can be made to work, but I also think it has something to do with Bose - but keep in mind the headunit is not produced by Bose. I can't remember who makes the headunit, it's Pioneer or Alpine or something like that. That's definitely a TL headunit, as all 2G CL headunits were 6CD changers.
Bose is finicky. Any one or any site I've ever been to says you can't get Bose-oriented or Bose genuine components to work with non-Bose ones. I don't know if there is any truth to it. But 1G TLs did not have Bose systems.

I'used to own a 99TL, I was forced to get a 10 MP3 changer so I could play burnt CDs.. Since I picked up my 02 TL-S I've been playing burnt CDs without a problem at all.
Maybe you should try to swap a 6 disk changer into your TL instead of the single disk..

If all else fails and it's being this much of a pain you might just wanna go aftermarket. If you like the simple look and some what stock look there's brands like mcintosh & nakamichi that make decks with that style. They cost alot but their some of the best on the market for sound quality. And if you don't wanna spend the money try and find bose speakers that will if in your ride and see from there.
I just remembered I had a similar problem when I tryed hooking up a 6ch amp to my stock deck and had no sound only ground noise. The owner of the stereo shop I worked for at the time told me about the low frequency's that I talked about in my last post.
