steering wheel swap

Is it a good idea to change out my steering wheel myself (oem woodgrain)? I cant seem to find any specifics on how to do it, and the cheapest price Ive found for an install is 80 bucks. Any suggestions?

I've seen instructions floating around before. I do remember reading that you have to be careful when changing your steering wheel as the airbag unit could deploy and potentially kill you.

$80 sounds good to me. I've just gotten into DIY's on my car like crazy, but this is one I'd probably leave to the pros!

no, you just have d/c the battery to let the airbags to completely shut off. the wait is about 5 mins... but people waited longer just to be sure....

what are you changing too? from reading, it sounds like you have the woodgrain.. and now you're changing into something else..?? if so , i call dibs if you're selling..!

disconnect battery. look behind the steering wheel there should be screws take them out and the airbag should come out. Disconnect the airbag wires you might have to disconnect the stereo and cruise control switches ( I think the 2 screws on the side of the switches hold them on) Then there should be the horn switch might look like a big coil of wire take that out. You should see a BIG screw your going to need a big break bar or a impact gun once that comes out your steering wheel should be off.

I found a DIY on the MDX forum. It took the guy 8 hours and he had to do it again b/c the wheel was not straight with the tires. I paid the dealership $150 to do it for me b/c I did not want to have the wheels not point strait. If you can get it for $80 that is a great price and probably worth your time

its takes the dealer 1/2 hour. They only charged me $40 (30 min labor) since it was only half hour! But this was like 2 years ago

eh, just pay the installation fee...not worth hassle if you mess it up.
