Starter Issues

Hey Guys,

I am new as a member, but I have viewed this forum many times with great info.
I have a 99 tl with 162k. In Texas these days, and yesterday when I went to start the car, it made 1 click with no turnover. I did it a few times with no results. Battery was fine. Looked under the hood, with no visible issues. Went back to the car and popped into neutral and tried starting. Started fine. I shut it off and tried it again with no issues. Happened again today, but the neutral thing didn't work. Kept trying and it finally clicked over. Any suggestions, called up my dealer service guy and he said it was 500 to fix it (replace starter) Any suggestions on what else it might be. I saw a post before on how a wire had melted and a mechanic had to move the wire from the heat source to remedy the problem. Any help would be great!!

if it clicks and tries to turn over its probably not the starter, battery might not have enough juice to start the car. take it to a sears, pepboys,... and get it check out. will only cost you around $10-$15.

I had the same problem with mine. But with mine if I would push the key harder into the ignition it would start, or when I moved the key around it would start. Seemed like it was a bad connection but really it was my start. I tried replacing the ignition switch, no luck.

I called around to a few places and they said it was probably the ignition switch, tried replacing that, still had the same problem. I got a hint that it was the starter here on Acurazine. I did a search and in different threads gathered a bunch of information and I diagnosed it was the starter. So I went to autozone and picked up a starter for like 160 I think. Installed it myself and it starts like a charm!

It sounds identical to the problem I had, no one thought it was the starter though....proved them wrong!

P.S you did say it would not even try to turn over correct?
