I have a 99tl so its a 4speed auto. when i drop it into shiftronic, i can usually drop it all the way down to first gear. today for some reason, it wouldnt go down to first gear. what's going on with my tranny?? this is the first time this has happened. i even slowed down to 0 and let it go into first on its own. so it does, but after i put it into second, it wont go back to first even if i slowed down. it would only drop back to first if i stopped all the way. freakin weiiirrrddd

 

you have to be going pretty slow for it to go down into 1st - protects itself from over reving it. check your manual - you will learn alot from it.

 

i did read the manual. but even then, from past experiences, i know i can drop it into first even if im going pretty fast. on the 99TL you can drop it into first whenever you want. i know its not good, but i dropped it int first when i was going around 40 a few times a while back. but i stopped doing that. but i should still be able to drop it into first when im at around 25-30. i dont get why it doesnt drop anymore

 

sorry but there is no way you did it when going 40 mph, I mean using the SS mode, you could manually. The computer wont let it over rev when downshifting, I never do unless Im going like 15 mph, our trannies are already kinda weak, you are just asking for it by throwing it into 1st...I wouldnt ever do it.

 

nah when ur going fast u cant down shift b/c theres a protection from over revving i also have a 99tl andi know what ur talking about te number like flashes and the it wont drop, but its normal.

 

Symptoms sound normal to me. Keep in mind the computer senses a number of cirteria in determining whether to drop to 1st. Speed, throttle position, rpm can all be a factor on whether or not your car will drop into 1st....

 

I agree with ^^^, BTW if you have been swifting into first gear going 40 mph, and the car is letting you do it....... then there is your problem, b/e the car shouldnt let you do it.

 

also, ss = sport shift. not sportronic

Our '99 first gears go to ~43-44mph, BUT, when in SS (tiptronic), once you're over 35mph the car wont let you drop to first...plus its bad for your tranny, if it let you.

Same in 2nd, its goes to 75mph, but when you're over 65, it wont let you engage second. Capish?

That's one of the reasons i got the Vafc (plus all the +'s this thing has) By dropping vtec to 3900Vi-4000-Vo, this wait is eliminated and not only this but you get to develop more power up top
