Post Speaking of gas...

I just had some bean burritos for lunch. hehe j/k.

I don't know what people are talking about getting low gas mileage. I just got my car and driven it only 900 miles. And the last time I filled up the tank all the way and reset the counter. I get 390 miles before the gas light comes on. So I figure 390/17.2 = 22.6mpg. The gas here is about $1.39 for premium.

Another question, do you guys prefer using only one name brand gas or just any premium gas will do? I don't use any of those convenient store gas...I don't know if it makes any difference or not.

The gas, at the same octane rating, should perform the same regardless of brand. What differetiates the brands is
(1) the additives they put in for cleaning the injectors etc (ie techroline in Cheveron)
(2) the marketing dollars they put in to make you buy the gas,
and (3) MOST IMPORTANT... the condition of the gas tanks at the storage facilities AND the gas station you are purchasing from.
Older tanks are prone to have more sediment and impurities that may end up on your fuel tank. That could really affect your car. So the next time you consider getting cheap gas from a run down station... you get the pic.

The gas manufacturers take "different routes" to get to the same octane rating. It's worth trying different brands until you find the one that your car "likes" the taste of best.

I am oversimplifying things here. But there is a difference, albeit one difficult for most people to discern.

Damn, Stamford sucks. My average price per gallon for Sunoco 93 Octane is around $1.97, but I've paid as much as $2.20 per gallon here.

Einstein: I stand corrected. I agree, there are differences and each driver will need to find one suitable for his/her car. Not too noticable in most cases by the average driver, but us crazy nuts...

I don't know what the prices of gas are out there, but we can definitely battle about the housing costs if you want. I read somewhere that Stamford/Greenwich had the highest costs in the country. Trust me, if we're not #1 yet for cost, we will be soon.

The gas thing is so stupid here because to get Sunoco 93 in Stamford it's currently $1.97. If I drive to my GF's place in Fairfield, CT, Sunoco 93 is currently $1.66. I thought the costs were due to state gas taxes, there's no reason that 20 miles north should be $.31/gallon cheaper. Eh, enough *****ing for now.

You can't use the number on your trip counter when the light comes on. The gas light comes on with a few gallons (~3.5) left in the tank. The easiest semi-accurate way to calculate gas milage is to reset the trip counter after every fill-up, and note the number of miles you've driven since your last fill-up. Do *not* top off your tank, and try to use the same gas station as often as possible (so that the pump stops with the same amount of gas in the tank as often as possible) Miles driven / amount of gas added = miles per gallon. Is this how everyone else is doing it? I've found that I have no trouble matching the gas milage on the sticker. On a 150 mile highway run I was able to get up to 31MPG.

My low fuel light is pretty much right on the money each time, indicating just over 3 gallons left.

As an aside, this will make the rest of the country jealous - 93 octane is $1.49 on average in Dallas, and for Sam's Wholesale Club members $1.39/gallon. Those who live further south, like in San Antonio, can get it for around $1.29.

up until last two weeks, premium 92 octane was at about $2.199-2.299 at branded stations and as low as 1.999 @ noname stations.
AS FOR HOUSING...
1 bedrm apt in silicon valley 600sf for about $1575-1800/mth (newer complex)
2bed2bath home sold for $430,000 a few houses away from me. ( I live in the "ghetto" ) Its nuts here. Oh yeah, the house is 80+ years old, is a dump and needs major renovation. has almost 900 sf (6000sf lot) though and is a nice craftsman.
3bed2bath, tract home in nice neighborhood 50 yrs old @$799.000 on 6000sf lot

yu888:

maybe we can't argue about the costs because the costs here in Stamford are very close to the costs there. You may have me by a little on the cost house part, but the rent is almost the same. the house next to me is 2 small BR, I bathroom sold for $365K. Not bad except it needed around $75K in renovations (so the new owner said).

Actually.. not all gas stations have the same octane.. if you look at the octane rating.. it says how they determine the #.. it is something like X+Y / 2 or something like that.. it is an avg... look carefully the next time you fill up.

Make sure you dont get gas when the tanker is there either.. it stirs up all the dirty stuff at the bottom of the tanks...

And ... change your fuel filter every 15k or so.. to clean out all the 'stuff' in your fuel system... its cheap. this will prevent problems later with clogged injectors, etc..

Like Aralan pointed out in his/her post : your actual MPG will be better than than 22.6 since you still have 2-3 gallons of gas left in your tank when your fuel light comes on. I will try to remember to bring my numbers tomorrow as I wrote it down each time I fill up at the gas station. Anyone else does that ?

Darn, The lowest I've seen in my area is 1.49 for 93 in South Orange, NJ, a few blocks from my house from a no-name place. There is also a place on route 21 in Newark too. Specials on weekends for those in NJ.

I found Super 92 at Costco recently as low as 1.829 and I was psyched! o well, just wish everything wasn't so damn expensive these days. Sounds like Stamford is crazy priced too. We must both be nuts to live with it...
