Spare Key

Is there anything special I need to know about the key for this car? 3.2 TL Type-S....Can I just go to the hardware store and cut a new key or does it have to be cut by the dealer?

My car only came with a key...no remotes or anything and everytime I open my car door with the key there's a little red security light that blinks so I'm just wondering because I'm going to make a spare key.

Thanks.

The key has a special ID chip inside that is needed to start the car, this is not a hardware store key. Its a dealer item, has to be the correct model key- then cutting it and programming it to the car. Same for the remote- you can buy it online but there are different ones and it has to be programmed to the car, so ask the dealer.
The red light on door means alarm is on- it sets when you lock the car.

here is the free owner manual link- click your year- then model and read thru it.
Great cars with a few trick things it will do like headlight off-timers and seat heater operations.

correct me if im wrong, but with most immobilizer chip keys, most manufactures allow 2 - 3 keys with or without a valet key? if he possibly has two keys or if he just has one already i would recommend that he brings all owned keys in case one gets kicked? im not 100% positive with acura, just inquiring for future reference in case i have this issue at work.

you can get a valet ket- car originally came with one.
The remotes lock/unlock all the doors-trunk, and set or turns off the alarm

It sounds like the OP recently got the car and has 1 key

register at acura too- and check the recall section
http://owners.acura.com/registration...erstepone.aspx
and at 1-800-382-2238 x5 ask them to check any open recalls and warranty

Just a little extra info for the OP:

You can unlock your doors with a store bought key, but your car wont start with it. It will crank and everything, but just wont start. Store bought ones are nice for keeping in your wallet in case you lock your keys in your car. That $5 for the key is SO much better than $50 for a locksmith to come work for 1 minute.

More like $2 lol

How expensive is the dealer cut key? I tried to stop in today after work but they were closed...tomorrow afternoon I shall drop by again.

When I look at each manual, it only gives me the first page and nothing else. I try to scroll down or anything and it says the other pages do not exist, like they were lost.

I tried Adobe versions 5 acro and 7 reader. I also tried multiple models on that page... all the same. Can anyone else get to more than the first page on any of those manuals?

I went to the hardware store and the lady wouldn't cut the key for me saying that since my real key has the chip....using a non-dealer cut key might damage my car security system if I tried to use it to open the door....is that true?

That's a bunch of . The only thing is that it will not start the car.

She is a bit paranoid. Probably sweeps her house for bugs (not insects) when she arrives home every night.

It only disables the car. If it were an electric key signal to open door, you wouldn't need a keyhole, or fob for that matter.

You can also lock the gas tank lever (with your regular key) so the valets can't steal gas.

And how do you do that? Is yours like the accord that locks the trunk? (not the gas tank lever) cause my '02 doesn't.

Hmm isn't there a key hole right by the gas tank lever? The trunk switch is in the door and the on/off switch for that is in the glove box which you can lock.

Not in mine. Now I have to go check, but I just have a lever i thought. . . .

Sure enough, no lever lock on mine. Just a lever.

Yeah, I was thinking maybe that yours had the same setup as the accord, but if you have electric trunk, mechanical lever with key, I am jealous (not that anybody else drives my car, but the wife).
