A solution other than a new paint job?
I noticed that my (used) 2000 Monterey Blue TL has a few "fade" spots where it looks like maybe the sun has faded to paint to the point of it being quite noticible even from a few feet distance. Also, I notice there are so swirled scraches on the hood and on the back (looks like someone cleaned and dried the areas with something too harsh). Is there anything I can do about these blemishes without repainting the entire car (like trying to buff out the scratches or touching up the paint spots) ?

bring it to a detailer or reputable body shop and see if the whole car can be compounded (if the paints not to thin already)...that will fix any faded spots and swirl marks, but you must wax the hell outta it afterwards to prevent further aging signs.
BTW, what is compounding and how does it help the fade spots (and swirl marks)?
And are these things normal on TL paint or is this from some kinda harsh treatment of the car before I bought it?

I think TLs are known for thin paint from the beginning. I just had my front bumper repainted last week from the paint pealing at the contact points of the factory nose mask. It took them two tries so far and they still don't have it looking right. And my TL-S (WDP) is only three months old!
