So... You wanna race ?

This is your engine-

This is your engine over red line -

These were from a Type R that over revved- forgot to shift?

BTW- this is the 3rd engine for this car- can you say "Driving School" ?

Wow! That is scary! Can you say "Three Mile Island?"

Graphic evidence of why I opted for D5 rather than SS on my first post break-in runs to redline this weekend (I know there's a rev limiter, but I didn't want to hit that, either).

THIRD engine? Just how dense is this person?

That still looks better than my Turbo Talon's engine after I threw (a brand new) timing belt. I only had 2.5 pistons left...

My friend did the same to his Type-R.
Top of third gear through a swooping right hand turn.
Shifting to forth with heavy lean going left...

*POP*

Suprise... you're in 2nd.

It was without a doubt the coolest thing I've seen in a car.
Thanks to internet boom, he had it towed to the dealer and walked out in a new Type R, same day.

Question

I haven't seen a damaged valves before, but how come only one valvehead was damaged? Wouldn't over-revving cause damage to the whole engine?

Since I am repairing this particular car my guess would be that it locked the minute it let go.When it was towed in it would not spin at all and the cam gears were so hard hit that the metal of the cam gear sprockets had actually deformed where the sprocket sits on the end of the camshaft. All I can say is WOW! the spark plug from that cylinder looked as though it had been pounded with a hammer. The piston has nice holes clean thru it and is shattered in two pieces. The cylinder walls shattered into several pieces turning it into a nice neat oval. The pictures do not show all the details unfortuanately but hopefully none of you will ever experience this.Jens

Question

Wayne and Jens, WTF? Wouldn't you have to WORK hard to get an engine to do this? I would expect the rev limiter to protect the engine from this kind of damage...

Not that I beat my car, but sometimes ya like to turn it loose!

Thats an Integra Type-R engine, equipped with a manual tranny. He most likely misshifted. I remember hearing about some Integra engine that reved up to 14k before it died.

I think he did a 5-2 downshift. Then he tried to take it to the dealership to get if fixed under warranty but the techs at the dealership were able to tap his computer which recorded his max speed and rpms reached. He was confronted with this and he confessed.

Folks -

Hitting the rev-limiter is not going to do this in a properly maintained vehicle. Period.

You have to have something go seriously wrong, like a blown timing belt, or really mis-shift with a manual.

The TLS engine will easily run 7000-7500 and not do any damage. The rev-limiter is a consumer and manafacturer protection device set at a conservative RPM to protect both.

IMO -
